Women's Tennis Falls in Spring Opener, 7-0, at Fairfield

STAMFORD, Conn.—
The University of Hartford women's tennis team opened its Spring schedule Saturday evening, dropping a 7-0 decision on the road in a dual match against Fairfield.
 
The Hawks started slow, dropping each of their three doubles matches. The closest doubles match for the Hawks came out of the No. 3 position in which sophomore Ashley Harel and freshman Christie Greenberg fell by a score of 8-4.
 
In singles play, the Hawks were unable to pick up a win. Two of the six singles matches, however, were closely contested. Playing out of the No. 1 position, graduate student Abby Liu picked up seven games in the two-set match, falling, 6-4, 6-3, to Fairfield's Monica Yajima. Freshman Jessica Galik also won seven games over two sets. Galik dropped her match with Tori Pirrello, 6-3, 6-4, from the No. 5 spot.
 
Harel, playing in the No. 2 position, lost her first set, 6-4, before retiring in the second set due to injury.
 
The Hawks were seeing their first action of the Spring season. Fairfield opened Spring play on January 28 against Fordham.
 
The Hawk women return to the courts February 11 when they host America East Conference foe UMBC at 10 a.m. in East Hartford, Conn.
