FINAL COMBINED RESULTS
SOUTH KENT, Conn. – The host team of the Hartford Hawks Invitational ran away with the team title in Tuesday's final round of play at Bull's Bridge Golf Club. The University of Hartford men's golf team ballooned its lead to 20 strokes after 54 holes to win its tournament.
The Hawks combined to shoot 291 on Tuesday, giving them a three-round score of 875. After two rounds of play, Hartford held a nine-stroke lead over then-second-place Rhode Island. Boston College and Sacred Heart tied for second place with 54-hole combined scores of 295.
Temple's Brandon Matthews earned the individual medalist honor after winning a playoff hole against Sacred Heart's Peter Ballo and Iona's Dylan Newman. Newman forced his way into the playoff with a course-record 63 in the final round. Each of the three in the tiebreak finished the tournament at 214 (-2).
Hartford junior Pat Ross finished just short of the playoff trio. Ross notched fourth place at 215 (-1) for the tournament, carding a 73 in the final round.
Ross was followed in the standings by teammates
Dan Yustin and
Evan Russell. Yustin finished fifth in the field after posting a one-under-par 71 on Tuesday, the lowest final-round score from the Hawk lineup. Yustin's final total was 218 (+2). Russell took sixth place, one stroke behind Yustin after 54 holes. Russell tallied a 74 over the tournament final 18 holes to shoot 219 for the tournament.
Sophomore
Wally Gonzalez also finished in the top-15. Gonzalez tied for 13
th, moving up five spots on the final day with a final-round 73. Gonzalez posted a score of 223 over three rounds. Freshman Will Betts rounded out the Hawk lineup, shooting a 239 in the invitational.
