DURHAM, N.H. – Behind an 80th minute goal from senior defender Shealagh Begley the Hartford women's soccer team posted a 1-0 victory over New Hampshire on Sunday afternoon in Durham. The Hawks remain one of two undefeated league teams (3-0), joining reigning champion Boston University, while improving to 7-2-3 overall.
Begley broke the scoreless stalemate with just over 10 minutes remaining in the contest with her first goal of the season, the second of her career. Fellow classmate Amelia Pereira began the play providing her teammate with the pass into the box which Begley buried in the left side of the net.
Despite six total shot attempts in the first half, neither team could find the back of the net, thank in large part to five total saves in the first 45 minutes. Hartford finished the first stanza with a 4-2 shot advantage, with three of the Wildcats going on net and forcing Hawks keeper Erin Quinlan to protect her turf. Her counterpart on New Hampshire, Erica Correa, finished the first half needing to stop both shot attempts from the visitors.
The home squad finished with the shot advantage in the second half with a 6-3 margin, but it was just one shot on goal in the half that mattered, that which came off the boot of Begley. Quinlan mustered three additional saves in the second 45 minutes, finishing with five total in the contest. Correa was forced to make one additional save. The Hawks also finished with a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks.
The Wildcats had then best opportunity come in the 71st minute when sophomore striker Meghan Ledwith fired a shot at Quinlan, whose initial save was bobbled but she was able to contain the ball and end the scoring opportunity. Just minutes after the Hawks goal, freshman midfielder Kirstyn Corder had another great look for New Hampshire, but her shot just barely slipped over the crossbar and out of harm's way.
Hartford returns to action on Thursday, October 4 when the Hawks travel to Orono, Maine for their longest road trip of the season. The America East action is scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m. at Alumni Field.
