Volleyball Splits Matches at Golden Griffins Invitational, Tops Host Canisius in Four Sets

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University of Hartford volleyball team closed out its opening weekend splitting a pair of matches on Saturday at the Golden Griffins Invitational hosted by Canisius. Hartford opened the day with a four-set win over the host Golden Griffins (25-20, 25-17, 21-25, 25-21) before dropping a three set decision to North Carolina State (22-25, 14-25, 13-25).

In the first match of the day, the Hawks battled back from an eight point deficit in the fourth set to guarantee its first victory in 2013. Hartford won the first two sets of the match thanks to senior Dionna Kirton and rookie Corinne Horanzy who each finished with seven kills combined. After dropping the second match, Horanzy and Kirton combined for eight total kills in the fourth set to secure the victory.

Overall for the match, Horanzy led the team with 14 kills, one of three players in double figures. Kirton joined her with 13 kills while junior Maya Louis added 12 kills and a team-best .364 hitting percentage with four errors in 22 total attacks.

Junior setter Jackie Tamburri led Hartford to a .233 team hitting average with 44 assists, en route to earning All-Tournament accolades for the two-day Golden Griffins Invitational. Overall, the Hawks finished with 55 kills and 24 errors in 133 total attacks.

Defensively, Tamburri completed her third-straight double double with 16 digs while Kirton led Hartford with a season-high for all players of 23 digs. The double double for Kirton was her second of the season. The Hawks also finished with eight total blocks, led by senior Lindsay Anderson who finished with three total.

In the final match of the weekend, the Hawks were again led by Horanzy who finished with seven kills. Tamburri led the squad with a .600 hitting average. She didn't commit an error in her five attempts while securing three points on kills. She also finished with 22 assists but broke her three-game double double streak, finishing with five digs. Freshman libero Paola Llerandi led the team with eight digs while Horanzy chipped in with six.

The Hartford volleyball team returns to the Nutmeg State for its next match when they travel to in-state rival Connecticut on Tuesday. The Hawks and Huskies are scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at Gampel Pavilion.
