Yale Ends Men's Basketball's Five-Game Win-Streak Sunday

NEW HAVEN, Conn.  – The University of Hartford men's basketball team snapped its five-game win-streak on Sunday, as it fell 69-57 to Yale at the John J. Lee Amphitheater. The Hawks dip to 5-2 on the season while the Bulldogs improve to 6-2 on the season.

Junior guard Taylor Dyson went 3-of-6 from long range and 4-of-5 from the charity stripe to lead the Hawks with 13 points. Senior Yolonzo Moore II added 11 points on a 4-of-8 afternoon from the field while rookie John Carroll finished with nine points while adding nine boards to lead Hartford in that category.

For Yale, Justin Sears, Matt Townsend and Jack Montague combined for 29 points in the second half to help the Bulldogs extend a two-point lead to 20 midway through the stanza. Leading all scorers with 14 points, Sears completed the double-double by grabbing 11 boards. Montague finished with 13 points.

Hartford returns to action with its America East opener at Vermont on Wednesday night. The Hawks and Catamounts are slated for a 7 p.m. tip-off from Patrick Gymnasium.


THE TURNING POINT:.
Yale broke open a back-and-forth first half that featured 10 ties and four turnovers by ripping off an 18-2 run to start the second, pushing its two-point halftime advantage to 45-27 with 13:38 left to play. The Bulldogs extended that lead to 20 with 10:45 remaining on the clock before the Hawks started to battle back. Using a 10-0 run that featured five-straight points from Yolonzo Moore II, Dyson capped the rally with a three that closed the gap to eight (55-47) with at the 4:07 mark. Staying within eight points of Yale with 2:45 to go, Hartford was unable to pull any closer as Yale 10-of-12 from the free throw line in the closing minutes to put the game away.


INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

·         Coming off a 40.7% effort from the field in the first half, Yale opened up the second by making 8-of-9 shots to pull away from the Hawks

·         The Bulldogs shot 46.8 percent from the floor overall, compared to a season-low 32.3% effort from the Hawks

·         Holding a 43-32 advantage on the boards, 12 of Yale's points were off of second-chance opportunities

·         Freshman John Carroll came one point and one rebound short of his first career double-double

·         Carroll's nine boards are a career-best for the freshman

·         From long range, the Hawks made 6-of-18 (33.3%) while going just 61.9% (13-of-21) from the free throw line

·         The Hawks forced Yale into 15 turnovers and scored 14 points off those miscues 

NEWS AND NOTES: 

·         Hartford saw its best win-streak since 2007-08, a five-game rally that began with a win over Saint Peter's, come to an end against Yale on Sunday

·         Dropping to 5-2, the Hawks' record through their first seven games ties the program's best Division I start

·         The Hawks entered the contest with a 5-1 overall record, a mark that was Hartford's best start since 1976-77 (6-0) NOTE: Hartford made the transition to Division I in 1984-85

·         The 69 points conceded by Hartford's defense is the most since it allowed 71 points to Sacred Heart in the season opener earlier this month

The Hawks open up America East Conference play early this season, as they head to Vermont for a mid-week tilt on Wednesday. The Hawks and Catamounts are scheduled for a 7 p.m. tip from Patrick Gymnasium.
