Volleyball Drops Season Opener in Three Sets at Boston College

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The University of Hartford volleyball team dropped its 2014 season opener in three sets (12-25, 17-25, 21-25) against the host Eagles at the Boston College Invitational on Friday night. The Hawks were led by a pair of outside hitters, Sareeta Nethersole and Chandler Goodwin who each finished with eight kills.

As a team, the Hawks finished their opening match with a combined hitting average of .132 with 33 kills and 18 errors in 114 total attacks. Senior setter Jackie Tamburri led the Hawks with 29 assists among the Hawks 33 kills while she was also among the defensive leaders with seven digs. Individually, Hartford's hitting efforts were led by Goodwin who finished with a .375 average with two errors among 16 attacks. As a team, Hartford best hitting came in the final set where the Hawks hitters combined for 14 kills and six errors in 41 attempts.

Leading the Hawks defensive efforts was Nethersole who was the only player to record double figures with 10 digs. As a team, Hartford finished with six total blocks with senior Kathryn Gawrych leading the blocking efforts with four total, two solo blocks to go along with a pair of block assists.

Hartford completes its season opening tournament with a pair of matches at Power Gymnasium in Chestnut Hill, Mass. on Saturday. The Hawks open the day with an 11 a.m. match against the Holy Cross Crusaders before facing the Marist Red Foxes at 3 p.m.
