CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The University of Hartford volleyball team split a pair of matches on day two of the Boston College Invitational, closing out the opening weekend of the 2014 season with a 1-2 record. The Hawks opened the day with a five-set win over Holy Cross (0-3 overall) before falling to Marist (2-0 overall) in three sets.
In the day's opening match against the Crusaders three players finished with double figure kills led by seniors Sareeta Nethersole and Kathryn Gawrych  who each finished with 11, which ties Gawrych's career high. Joining them was freshman Katy Henchy who collected 10 kills. Of the trio, Gawrych led the way with a .476 hitting average suffering just one errors in 21 total attacks.
Senior setter Jackie Tamburri finished with 44 assists, among the Hawks 54 total kills. The floor marshal led Hartford to a .201 team hitting average with 20 errors in 169 attempts. Tamburri (19 digs) was also one of four players to finish with double figure digs, led by Nethersole who stopped 26 Holy Cross attempts, one shy of her career best. Sophomores Corinne Horanzy and Paola Llerandi joined them with 13 and 12 digs, respectively.
The Hawks also combined to collects 13 total blocks, the most for a Hartford team since September 16, 2007 when they combined for 14 blocks against Marist. Leading the way was Gawrych who blocked nine total Holy Cross attempts, one solo and eight block assists. Henchy finished right behind her with seven block assists.
In the second match of the day, Hartford was led by Nethersole and Chandler Goodwin who finished with five and four kills respectively. Tamburri collected 15 assists against the Red Foxes, giving her 59 total for the day.
The Hawks return to the court for a single mid-week match when they travel to Riverdale, N.Y. for a 7 p.m. battle against the Manhattan Jaspers. That meeting will renew a series that hasn't been contested since 2009. Overall, the Hawks hold a 4-1 advantage in the five previous match-ups.
