Nethersole Records Double Double as Hawks top Bryant in Three Sets

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Hartford volleyball team defeated Bryant University (25-13, 25-23, 25-22) for their second win against the Bulldogs of the 2014 season. Leading the Hawks (7-5) was senior outside hitter Sareeta Nethersole who finished with 11 kills, completing her ninth-straight match with double digit kills.

Senior Kathryn Gawrych added to Nethersole's performance offensively with eight kills on 12 attempts with two errors for a .429 hitting percentage, which led the team. Also hitting well for Hartford was sophomore Corinne Horanzy who finished with nine kills and a .333 average with two errors on 21 attempts.

Senior setter Jackie Tamburri captained the Hawks offense, collecting 33 assists, while among the leaders defensively with seven digs. Leading the way on the defensive end was libero Paola Llerandi who finished with 16 dig, while Nethersole added 12 completing her seventh double double of the season.
 

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS

·         Senior outside hitter Sareeta Nethersole compiled her ninth-straight match with 10 or more kills, leading Hartford with 11 against the Bulldogs.

·         The Hawks largest lead (13) in a single set came in the opening set where they never trailed from end to end.

·         In addition to her 11 kills, Nethersole added 12 digs, completing her seventh double double of the season.

·         Three of the top Hawks leading hitters finished with a +.300 hitting average, led by senior Kathryn Gawrych who tallied eight kills on 14 attempts with two errors (.429).

·         Two Hawks recorded double figure digs on the night including sophomore Paola Llerandi who led the way with 16
 

SET BREAKDOWN

SET ONE

·         Chandler Goodwin led the Hawks in the opening set with three kills and no errors in four attempts for a perfect 1.000 average.

·         Sareeta Nethersole had three kills in four attempts for a .750 average and defensively added six digs and one block.

·         As a team, the Hawks had a hitting percentage of .414 with 14 kills on 29 attempts with two errors, the second best single set hitting average of the season.

·         The Hawks scored the first five points of the match and never relinquished that lead. 

SET TWO

·         The Hawks finished with 16 total kills on 49 attempts with just four errors for a .245 hitting average.

·         Nethersole again led the offense with five kills and one service ace, which provided the set point and a 2-0 match advantage for Hartford.

·         Corinne Horanzy added four kills on six attempts for a .667 average.

·         Paola Llerandi led the Hawks defensively, stopping 11 of Bryants attempts to record double digit kills in the second set alone.

·         The Hawks and Bulldogs seesawed back and forth with four lead changes and six ties before deciding the set.

SET THREE

·         With three kills in the third set, Nethersole recorded her ninth straight match with 10 or more kills and her seventh double double.

·         Kathryn Gawrych joined Goodwin in finishing a set with a perfect 1.000 hitting percentage, putting down four kills on four attempts.

·         The third set finished with three lead changes and five ties between the Hawks and Bulldogs

UP NEXT:
The volleyball team will travel just nine miles from its West Hartford campus for the next three matches at the CCSU Blue Devils Invitational. Along with the host Blue Devils, Hartford will join NJIT and Providence for the two-day event. The Hawks open against the host on Friday, Sep. 19 with a 4 p.m. first serve. On Saturday, Hartford opens the day against NJIT (1:30 p.m.) and will close out the tournament at 4 p.m. against Providence.
