Men's Soccer Comes up Short at Albany

THE BASICS:

RESULT: Albany 2, Hartford 1
RECORDS: Hartford: 4-5-3 (0-2-1 AE); Albany 6-6-1 (1-2-0 AE)
LOCATION: Bob Ford Field (Albany, N.Y.)

THE LEAD: A late goal by redshirt senior Rohan Roye got the University of Hartford men's soccer team on the board, but it wasn't enough for the Hawks to erase a two-goal halftime deficit as they fell at Albany, 2-1, on Wednesday evening. Jake Barros and Leo Melgar provided the scoring for the Great Danes in the 29th and 43rd minutes, respectively.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

·         With 16:37 left to play in the opening stanza, Albany took a 1-0 advantage behind the strength of Barros' second goal of the season. Taking a cross from Martin Gorrie, Barros, who was in stride towards the net, got his left foot behind the ball and buried a shot to the right post, past a diving David MacKinnon.

·         Albany doubled that lead before the halftime break as Afonso Pinheiro sent a pass from the middle to Melgar, who beat Hartford's keeper with a low shot to the right for his fifth marker of the season. That insurance goal was netted at the 42:37 mark.

·         With less than five minutes remaining in the match, Hartford reached the scoreboard and cut Albany's lead in half. In a scramble inside of the box, freshman Mikkel Song set up Roye, who headed home his second goal of the season with 4:40 left to play.

·         Hartford would be held without a shot for the remainder of the contest, as Albany came away with the one-goal triumph.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

·         Making several impressive stops on the night, MacKinnon recorded a season-high six saves in net for the Hawks in the losing effort

·         Hartford was outshot by a 19-6 margin

·         Goalkeeper Eric Orlogio was forced into action once for the Great Danes

NEWS & NOTES:

·         Wednesday's loss snapped a two-game win streak for Hartford against Albany.
