THE LEAD:

SET ONE:
The Retrievers got off to a fast start in the opening stanza, building a quick 6-1 lead. But the Hawks came storming back thanks to the duo of Paulina Modestow and Henchy, who combined for kills on three of four points that trimmed the deficit to 6-5. At that juncture, the teams began trading points to a 14-13 UMBC lead, but the Retrievers ran off four straight to put the lead at 18-13. The Hawks battled back with four straight of their own, but UMBC was able to stem the tide and finish off the set with a block from Zoya Trendafilova.

SET TWO:
The two teams came out of the gates even with the Retrievers holding an early 3-2 lead, but UMBC caught fire, and netted 15 of the next 18 points to build an 18-6 advantage. Hartford refused to quit, cutting the deficit to 10 after an Astrid Mangual ace, but UMBC was able to finish off the set with a Paola Rojas kill.

SET THREE:
In the third, the Hawks and Retrievers put forth an even battle early on, with the teams going back and forth all the way to an 11-10 lead for the visitors. But UMBC stiffened, netting six straight points for a 17-10 lead, and was able to push it to a 25-16 set victory from there. Schneider had six kills in the stanza.
