THE LEAD: A late goal stunned the University of Hartford men's soccer team on Saturday night, as it fell at Stony Brook, 1-0, in America East action at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium. With 4:46 left to play, Martin Giordano finished a ball from six yards out to break open the scoreless match and secure the win for the Seawolves. The Hawks put 22 shots up, including seven on net, but were unable to cash in.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
· In a physical first 20 minutes that featured 10 fouls called, Anthony LoBello put the first shot on goal of the match up, but Stony Brook keeper was in place to make the save at the 20:07 mark. The Hawks continued to apply pressure during the first half as Orban was called into action two more times before the break as he stopped Jhamie Hyde's header in the 35th minute before making the save on a shot from Jeff Tryon less than six minutes later.
· During that stretch, Stony Brook matched Hartford's seven shot attempts. The Hawks' defense kept the Seawolves at bay, as they blocked a pair of those shots. MacKinnon had three first-half saves to preserve the shutout heading into the halftime break.
· Hartford was the aggressor to start the second half, as it came out of the gates firing with four shots during the first 10 minutes before allowing Stony Brook to get one off. The Hawks opened up the stanza by taking 13 shots to the Seawolves' three, but were unable to cash in.
· Despite the minimal shot attempts, Stony Brook capitalized in the 86th minute. Serge Gamwanya and Vince Erdei were credited with assists on Giordano's sixth goal of the season, which came from six yards away from the net. In the final minute, the Hawks had one chance to knot up the game and potentially force overtime, but Tryon's header at the 89:09 mark was saved by Orban.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
· Hartford was unable to cash in on its 22 shot attempts, including 15 in the second half.
· The Hawks outshot the Seawolves, 22-13, putting two more shots on target than their counterparts with a 7-5 edge
· Between the pipes for Hartford, MacKinnon made four saves leading up to the Seawolves' late goal.
· Jason Orban combined for a game-best seven saves for Stony Brook.
· Corner kicks were even on the night as each team attempted three.
NEWS & NOTES:
· Saturday's setback at Stony Brook ended the Hawks' two-game win-streak against the Seawolves.
· Stony Brook evened up the all-time series at 6-6-5 with the 1-0 win.
· Five of the 17 games between the two teams have ended in a draw, while 10 of the remaining 12 matches have been decided by a single goal.
· The Hawks went 0-1-1 on the week as they were coming off a 2-2, double-overtime draw at No. 15 Syracuse in their non-conference finale.
