Hawks Remain Unbeaten in League Play with Draw at UMBC

THE BASICS:

RESULT: Hartford 1, UMBC 1 (2ot)
RECORDS: Hartford 8-2-3 (2-0-2 AE); UMBC 3-8-3 (1-1-2 AE)
LOCATION: Retrievers Soccer Park (Balimore, Md.)

THE LEAD: The University of Hartford women's soccer team battled UMBC to a 1-1, double overtime draw on Thursday evening at Retrievers Soccer Park. With the tie, the Hawks remain unbeaten since the start of America East action with a 2-0-2 mark. The Hawks were dealt a red card in the 31st minute, but still managed to take a one goal edge into the halftime break thanks to a breakaway goal from junior Aaliyah Ingram at the 37:57 mark. That card came back to haunt the visiting squad, though, as UMBC capitalized on the 11-on-10 advantage midway through the second half and knotted up the score at 1-1 on a goal from Jenna Denis.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

·         The Hawks held the upperhand early in Thursday's match, but were delivered a blow before the end of the first half. With 15:09 remaining in the first, senior defender Emma Donnelly tripped-up a Retriever in the penalty box, resulting in a red card for the Hawks and a penalty kick opportunity for UMBC. Katie Berkowitz took the honors on the ensuing penalty kick, but the Hawks dodged a huge bullet as her attempt hit the right post to keep the match scoreless. The Retrievers kept the pressure on, as two minutes later, Amanda Dailey blasted a shot from the top of the box to force Jurg into action for the first time in the game.

·         It didn't take long for the Hawks to adjust to being down a field player, though. A misplayed ball by UMBC's defense led to a breakaway opportunity for Ingram. Breaking through UMBC's defense, Ingram lofted a beautiful shot that hit the upper left 90 to provide Hartford with the one goal advantage at the 37:57 mark. The Hawks maintained that lead heading into the halftime break.

·         The opening portion of the second half tilted in favor of UMBC, as the home team opened up the stanza by taking the first six shots. Jurg came up with three saves during that stretch, but in the 68th minute, the Retrievers capitalized on their 11-on-10 advantage. Dailey headed a ball out of a corner kick on target for Jenna Denis, who knotted up the score with her second goal of the season. The tally was the first conceded by Jurg and the Hawks' back line in more than 281 minutes..

·         Hartford continued to face pressure from the Retrievers' front line, as UMBC held a 9-4 advantage in shots during the final stanza of regulation. Despite the two teams combining for seven shots in overtime, neither team would convert, ending the match in a draw. The Hawks' best scoring opportunity in overtime came in the final minute of the contest. With 49 seconds remaining on the scoreboard, senior Kylie Hoang got a shot off from 10 yards out, but Nance was in perfect place to make the save. Prior to that, Jurg was forced to come up with her fifth and final save of the night on a header by Dailey in the 108th minute.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

·         Hartford was outshot, 19-12, on the match as UMBC held advantages in each of the four stanzas

·         The two squads combined for seven shots throughout overtime, with the Retrievers holding a slight, 4-3 edge

·         Jurg's five saves against the Retrievers tied a season-high; her counterpart, Nance, recorded four saves on the evening

·         Ingram paced the Hawks' attack with four shots, two of which were marked on goal

·         UMBC also won the battle of corner kicks at 5-3.

NEWS & NOTES:

·         Thursday's draw at UMBC extends the Hawks' unbeaten streak to four games. Since falling at Fairleigh Dickinson last month, Hartford is 2-0-2.

·         Furthermore, Hartford has suffered just one loss in its last 11 matches, posting a record of 7-1-3 during that stretch.

·         Ingram improved her team-leading goal total to seven with her first-half tally; she is currently the America East's scoring leader.

·         Hartford has not lost in overtime this season, as it is 1-0-3 in its four contests that required extra time.

·         UMBC's goal in the 68th minute was the first conceded by Jurg and the Hawks' back line in more than 281 minutes.
