THE BASICS:

RECORDS: Hartford (3-2); Providence (1-3)
LOCATION: Alumni Hall (Providence, R.I.)
ATTENDANCE:
THE LEAD: Junior Deanna Mayza netted a team-high 17 points, but it wasn't enough for the University of Hartford women's basketball team to overcome a cold shooting performance as it fell at Providence, 69-50. The Friars, who shot 57.5 percent on the afternoon, delivered 10 three-pointers in the contest, including seven in the second half, to put the game out of reach. Jovana Nogic accounted for six of those triples to finish with a game-best 20 points for Providence.
FIRST HALF:
Hartford was plagued by cold shooting in the first half, especially in the opening minutes. Missing the mark on their first five shots, Lindsey Abed got the Hawks on the scoreboard midway through the first and made it a 4-3 game on a three-pointer at the 4:47 mark. Following a deep three from the Friars' Sarah Beal, another triple, this one from Mayza, kept Hartford in the game at 7-6. But the Hawks wouldn't get any closer, as Providence, which made 50 percent of its first-quarter shots, ripped off six unanswered points to go up, 13-6, by the end of the stanza.
The shooting woes continued for the Hawks in the second. Hartford managed to pull within five points on two occasions early in the stanza, but Providence answered back. A Jovana Nogic bucket with 3:05 left extended the Friars' lead into double digits before Allison Lewis made it a 12-point advantage on a layup less than 30 seconds later. Providence would go on to take its largest lead of the half before the break, thanks to a Nogic three-pointer with 15 seconds remaining.
SECOND HALF:
A 7-0 stretch within a minute of action quickly pushed Providence's lead to 17 at 34-17 with 6:49 to go in the third. The Hawks started to come alive, though, as they managed to bring the gap down to 13 using a 7-3 spurt. Trailing 37-24 with 3:51 left, the two squads exchanged buckets for the remainder of the stanza as the Friars took a 16-point lead into the fourth quarter.
The shots started to fall for Hartford in the final 10 minutes of action, but each time the Hawks converted, Providence answered with one a bucket of its own. An 8-0 run, featuring back-to-back threes from Nogic, extended the Friars' advantage to 20 points at 52-32 with 7:22 remaining. Mayza brought the deficit down to 16 for Hartford, as she knocked down two triples and added a layup, but Providence held off any attempt of a Hawks' comeback as it connected for four threes down the final stretch to put the game away.
