Men's Soccer Sends Seniors Off With 2-0 Blanking of UMass Lowell

THE BASICS:

RESULT: Hartford 2, UMass Lowell 0
RECORDS: Hartford (5-7-5, 1-4-2 AE); UMass Lowell (7-9-1, 1-4-2)
LOCATION: Al-Marzook Field at Alumni Stadium (West Hartford, Conn.)

THE LEAD: University of Hartford senior Andrew Murry netted the go-ahead goal in the 20th minute before junior Jeff Tryon followed suit in the 48th minute to lift the men's soccer team to a 2-0 blanking of visiting UMass Lowell in both teams' season finale on Wednesday night. Murry, who was one of six players honored in a pregame ceremony for Senior Night, put the Hawks on the board with his first career goal while Tryon reached the back of the net for the fourth time this season. Redshirt sophomore Scott McKirgan recorded one save in his first start of the season to earn the clean sheet for the second time in his career.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

·         The Hawks struck early and often to start the game before Murry found the back of the net in his first career start. Putting up four of the match's first five shots, including a blast from Javoni Simms that was saved by UMass Lowell keeper Austin Kroll in the ninth minute, Hartford broke through at the 19:32 mark.

·         Murry's unassisted score, which came from just deep in the scoring box, lofted over the head of an outstretched Kroll and hit the upper left 90 to give the Hawks the early 1-0 edge.

·         In the first half, UMass Lowell was silenced by Hartford's defense as its lone shot attempt came in the fourth minute on a high shot by Wuilito Fernandes.

·         Hartford doubled its lead to 2-0 early in the second half as Tryon tapped in his fourth goal on the season on volleys from Javoni Simms and freshman Mikkel Song at the 47:09 mark.

·         The Hawks continued to dominate as keeper McKirgan was only forced into action one time on a Nana Osei opportunity in the 66th minute.

·         Hartford nearly extended its lead to 3-0 late in the match at the 77:03 mark, but Kroll came up with a great save and smothered a bullet from Simms fired from point-blank range.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

·         Hartford posted a dominated first half, which resulted in the early advantage.

·         The Hawks outshot the River Hawks, 8-1, in the first 45 minutes and held a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.

·         UMass Lowell's shot attempts were again limited in the second half, as Hartford held it to just three looks.

·         Overall, Hartford held 15-4 and 4-2 advantages in shots and corner kicks, respectively.

·         McKirgan, who made his first start of the season and second on his career, recorded one save en route to his second career win and shutout.

·         Kroll came up with two stops for UMass Lowell.

·         In his first career start, Murry led the Hawks with five shot attempts.

NEWS & NOTES:

·         Having a hand in Hartford's second goal of the game in the 48th minute, Song improved his team-best assist total to seven.

·         Song's seven helpers are the most by a Hawk since 2002, when Guy Primor finished off the seven with seven assists.

·         Prior to Wednesday's match, Hartford's six seniors (Jhamie Hyde, Blake Jones, Anthony LoBello, Andrew Murry, Rohan Roye and Javoni Simms) were honored as they suited up in Hawks' uniforms for the final time in their careers. The group amassed 36 wins over in four years and piloted the Hawks to back-to-back America East Championship title game appearances in 2013 and 2014.

·         Hartford improves to 3-0-0 against UMass Lowell and has combined to outscore the River Hawks, 9-1, over those three matches.
