WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Hartford softball team dropped a pair of games to Stony Brook on Saturday in America East action. The Hawks (2-29, 0-7 AE) fell to the Seawolves (15-12, 4-1 AE) 16-3 in the opening game before dropping an 8-0 decision in the nightcap. Both contests went five innings.
Senior
Margaret Betz paced the Hawks in the opening game with a pair of doubles and an RBI. Bria Green accumulated five RBI on a 4-of-6 effort from the plate for Stony Brook, with three of her hits going for extra bases on a triple and two homers. Lauren Kamachi doubled twice in five at-bats, recording three RBI.
The two teams will wrap-up the three-game series on Sunday afternoon with first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m.
GAME ONE:Hartford dropped Saturday's opening game, 16-3. Stony Brook opened up the game by scoring seven runs in the top of the second before putting the game away with nine runs in the top of the fourth frame. Brian Green homered twice for the Seawolves and collected five RBI as Jane Sallen coasted to the win inside of the circle to improve to 9-7 on the season.
Sallen held the Hawks to just four hits, each of which came off the bat of a different player.
Jamie Soles, Betz, and
Sawyer Fried each collected RBI as the Hawks scratched three runs across home plate in the bottom of the fourth. Betz's one-out double brought in
Jackie Kelly and
Marisa Ferguson, who earned back-to-back walks, before Fried put the second Hartford run on the board with a base hit. Betz would then wrap-up the scoring with two outs as an infield error allowed her to cross home.
Kelsey Bird, a freshman, took the loss for Hartford. She went 4.0 innings, allowing 16 runs – 10 earned – on 13 Stony Brook hits.
GAME TWO:In the nightcap, Hartford was outhit by Stony Brook, 10-2, as the Seawolves took a 5-0 lead in the top of the second. Stony Brook went on to add a single run in the top of the third before it took an 8-0 advantage in the next inning.
Betz and
Elizabeth Newkirk were the lone Hawks to collect hits off Stony Brook starting pitcher, Allison Cukrov. The senior struck out nine batters to improve to 5-3 on the season.
Bianca Ross suffered the loss in the circle for the Hawks. In 2.0 innings, she allowed six earned runs on six hits.
