THE LEAD: Freshman Paulina Modestow had her first career double-double with 16 kills and 10 digs, but the Hartford volleyball team was toppled by a strong Bucknell offensive performance, as the Bison defeated the Hawks 3-1 on Saturday morning at the Sacred Heart Hampton Inn Shelton Invitational. Karen Campbell led the Bison with 17 kills and hit an impressive .517, as Bucknell hit .225 for the match as a team.

KALLICK'S TAKE:
"The second set showed what we're capable of doing as a team," head coach Mitch Kallick said. "When we play to our potential, we will be very tough to beat.

"The past two weeks have been a huge growing experience for our team. Our players are learning what each individual needs to bring to every match for our team to be successful. We saw a lot of good from our squad this weekend. I'm excited to watch this film and get back in the gym on Monday as we prepare for a very competitive weekend at Hofstra."

SET-BY-SET BREAKDOWN:
SET ONE:
Bucknell got out to a strong start, using a pair of kills from Steph Occhiogrosso to build an 8-4 lead. The Hawks were able to rebound, though, with a Modestow kill, a Kathryn Gawrych ace and an attack error cutting the advantage to 8-7. But the Bison came back with six of the next seven points to regain a 14-8 lead, and went on to a 25-16 victory. Bucknell hit .219 in the opening set, while the Hawks posted eight kills and eight errors.

SET TWO:
Hartford responded in a big way in the second, beginning with consecutive kills from Modestow on the first two plays, and riding that to a 4-0 lead. The teams traded points to an 8-5 score, and then a block from the duo of Rachel Moll and Gawrych sent the Hawks on a 6-1 run that opened up a 14-6 margin. The Bison were able to keep the margin in that range to an 18-10 score, but Hartford came right back with four straight points, the final two on kills from Modestow and Katy Henchy, and rode that momentum to a 25-12 win. The Hawks hit an outstanding .429 in the set, with just one error on the attack.

SET THREE:
The Bison returned the favor in the third, upping their attack pressure to jump on Hartford to the tune of a 17-4 lead out of the gate, hitting .571 in the process. The Hawks were able to slow the momentum with three straight points, beginning with an Astrid Mangual kill, but were unable to overcome the early deficit, falling 25-16.

SET FOUR:
The fourth set saw the teams come out even, with the Hawks opening an early 7-4 lead on the strength of three Modestow kills. But the Bison came back with three straight points, all on kills, to knot the score at 7-7. The squads went blow-for-blow over the next several points to an 11-11 score before Bucknell ran off three in a row for a 14-11 lead and forcing a Hartford timeout. The Hawks were able to trim the deficit to 16-14, but the Bison upped the offense and ran off seven of the next eight points, holding on for a 25-16 win and a 3-1 victory in the match.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- In the second set, the Hawks hit a season-best .429 and delivered the most decisive set victory of the season at 25-12.
- The Hawks saw three players post double-digit digs, led by Erinn Lavelle's 14. Modestow added 10 as did setter Astrid Mangual.
