The University of Hartford women's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking, 2-1 loss at UAlbany in a rematch of last season's America East Championship on Sunday evening. The second-seeded Hawks, who shared the America East Regular-Season crown with the top-seeded Great Danes, posted the most wins since 2011, finishing with a 13-5-1 mark.
Â
The Hawks led early thanks to senior defender
Caitlin Smallfield's fourth goal of the year in the 23rd minute, but the Great Danes came back to tie up the match with 93 seconds left in the first before netting the game-winning tally in the 76th minute.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The field was tilted in favor of UAlbany in the opening part of the first half, but the Great Danes were unable to capitalize on any of their scoring opportunities thanks to clutch saves by Jurg. In the 11th minute, she came up with a save on a point-blank shot from Kiana Rugar before keeping the match scoreless with another stop on a long-distance blast by Alexa Schneider two mintues later.
- The midway point of the first half saw momentum shift in favor of the Hawks. At the 22:43 mark, Smallfield broke the game open, putting Hartford ahead, 1-0, on a ball served into the box from Julia Carr out of a corner kick.
- Jurg came up with her third and final save of the half on a header from Schneider with seven minutes left in the half, but UAlbany went on to get one past the Hawks' keeper before the end of the stanza. Gina Bracamonte chipped a pass over the Hartford defense down field out of a free kick, and Rugar finished with a low shot to the right post from 10 yards out.
- Hartford picked up the offensive attack out of the halftime break, but was unable to break through Great Danes' keeper Chloe Borasky. The match remained deadlocked at 1-1 until the 76th minute, when Vivian Vega scored from just outside of the 18-yard box to give the Great Danes their first lead of the game.
- The Hawks had one final chance to net the equalizer in the final 15 seconds, but Carr's strike on a free kick from the corner was punched away by Borasky.
Â
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- UAlbany led 8-3 in shots after the first half, forcing Jurg into action three times during that stretch.
- Hartford went on to outshoot the Great Danes by a 9-6 count in the second, but was unable to muster up its second goal of the day.
- Jurg finished with a game-best six saves while each of Borasky's four saves came in the second half for UAlbany.
