Hawks Make it Eight-Straight Wins in 15-8 Victory Over Yale

THE BASICS:

RESULT: Hartford 15, Yale 8
LOCATION: Fiondella Field (West Hartford, Conn.)
RECORDS: Hartford (16-5, 2-1 AE); Yale (4-15-1, 0-0 Patriot)

THE LEAD:
A big day for the offense, led by a towering home run from Ashton Bardzell, carried the Hartford baseball team to a 15-8 thrashing of Yale on Wednesday afternoon. The victory pushed the Hawks' winning streak to eight and improved their overall record to 16-5 on the year.

Bardzell led the way with three hits, including a three-run homer and an RBI double to go along with four total runs driven in. Aaron Wilson collected a career-high four hits in the game, and Erik Ostberg added two hits and two RBIs in the affair. Harrison White had two hits and two RBIs for Yale.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Hartford got going early in the game, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Aaron Wilson singled and advanced to second base on a groundout. After stealing third, Wilson crossed home run plate on a sac fly to deep left from Chris DelDebbio to boost the Hawks to a 1-0 lead.
  • Yale managed to battle back in the third inning by scoring three runs. The Bulldog effort was led by a two-run homer from Benny Wanger to take a 3-1 lead into the bottom half of the third.
  • The Hawks, after falling behind in the top half, rallied and led one of the more impressive charges from the team this season, plating nine runs in a thrilling third inning. Singles from Wilson and Bardzell and a walk for DelDebbio loaded the bases with two outs, and then the onslaught began. Ostberg lined a two-run single to left to tie the game at three, and then Ben Bengtson ripped an RBI single to push the Hawks ahead 4-3. Chris Sullivan and TJ Ward would hit back-to-back RBI singles, and then Bardzell stepped up to the plate and crushed a three-run bomb to left to move the Hawks out in front 9-3. After two more singles from Nick Campana and Wilson, David MacKinnon mashed an RBI single to push the lead to 10-3.
  • Yale answered the Hartford rally, getting two more runs back in the following inning on a two-run double to close the gap to 10-5.
  • Hartford answered right back with three more runs in the bottom half of the fourth. Bengtson reached base after a strikeout got past the catcher, and eventually came all the way around to score on a wild pitch. Bardzell doubled in Ward, who singled, from second to extend the lead, and then Campana lined a single to right field to get the Hawks' lead up to 13-5.
  • Hartford received a combined three scoreless innings of work from Billy Devito and Hayden Manning out of the bullpen to slow down the Bulldog bats between the fifth and seventh innings.
  • Heads-up base running from Sullivan brought the Hawks another run in. After walking, Sullivan advanced to second on a wild pitch, and then came all the way from second to score on a throwing error by the Yale shortstop to extend the lead to 14-5. Hartford would add another run in the inning to make it 15-5.
  • Yale slowly tried to crawl back into the game, adding two runs in the eighth and one in the ninth, but Sebastian DiMauro eventually forced the Bulldogs to end the game on a groundout, and the Hawks were winners again by a final score of 15-8.

    INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • With the win, the Hawks have now tied the longest winning streak in program history at eight games. Hartford last won this many games in a row in 1994, taking eight-straight decisions on the way to a 22-27 record.
  • Wilson's four hits were the most hits he's collected in a game in his Hawks career. Wilson had previously ripped three hits in a game five different times, most recently versus Northeastern last season.
  • Hartford's 18 hits in today's game ties the season-best mark for hits in a game on the year. The Hawks did not register any games with as many as 18 hits all of last season.
  • The 16-5 record ties the Hawks for the best start in Division I program history. Hartford is now just one more win away from a program-best 17-5 record to start the year, as the 1988 Hawks team began 16-6.

    NEXT UP:

The Hawks get a pair of days off before heading up to UMass Lowell this weekend to take on the River Hawks in a three-game series. A doubleheader will open the series on Saturday at noon, and game three will begin at noon on Sunday.
