Gauthier Shines and Hawks Muster 18 hits in 12-0 Victory Over Radford

THE BASICS:

RESULT: Hartford 12, Radford 0
LOCATION: Radford Baseball Stadium (Radford, Va.)
RECORDS: Hartford (4-0); Radford (1-8)

THE LEAD: Kyle Gauthier tossed seven scoreless frames and threw a no-hitter through 6 2/3 innings as the Hartford baseball team stretched its winning streak to four with a 12-0 victory over Radford. Gauthier had his no-hitter broken up by Shane Johnsonbaugh's double with two outs in the seventh, but it would end up being the Highlander's lone hit off the senior, as the reigning America East Pitcher of the Week put together a stellar performance on the mound once again.

Hartford's bats exploded to the tune of 18 hits in the game, with Erik Ostberg putting together a four-hit, two-RBI day. Ben Bengtson ripped three hits, including a triple, and drove in three runs. Simon Palenchar collected Radford's only other hit on the day.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Hawks took the lead in the opening frame after Ostberg ripped an RBI single up the middle to score Chris DelDebbio from second. The early run put Hartford up 1-0 to open up the game, giving Gauthier some breathing room before he took the mound.
Gauthier forced three quick outs in the bottom of the first, picking up a strikeout to get into a groove on the rubber early.
Hartford continued to tear it up with two outs, with the bats exploding in the second inning to charge the Hawks to a commanding 6-0 lead early on. Dalton Ruch started the onslaught with a single, and a costly error by Radford allowed Joe Roberti to reach and get all the way to second, pushing Ruch to third. Aaron Wilson lined a two-run single to add to the Hawks lead, but Hartford was not done there. Wilson stole second, and David MacKinnon drove him in on an RBI single. MacKinnon then stole second, DelDebbio walked, and Ostberg and Ben Bengtson ripped back-to-back RBI singles to give the Hawks a 6-0 advantage.
The Hawks were clicking on both sides of the field, as Gauthier completely shut down Radford for the entirety of his performance this afternoon. The senior righty continued to blank the Highlanders, tossing seven scoreless frames and striking out four in his performance.
The Hawks kept swinging, tacking on an RBI groundout by DelDebbio and another RBI single by Bengston to push the lead to 8-0 through fourth innings.
TJ Ward plated two more runs on an RBI single after Ostberg and Bengtson both reached base. Hartford was in control up 10-0 in the sixth inning.
Gauthier did not surrender a hit until the seventh inning when Johnsonbaugh mashed a double to break up the streak of 20-straight batters retired to start the game for Gauthier. Radford would not take advantage of the two-out hit, and the Hawks held onto the lead.
Bengtson continued to tear the cover off the ball, crushing a triple to right center that scored Ostberg, and Nick Campana tapped in Bengtson on another RBI single. The Hawks offense was all over Radford's hurlers, now boasting a 12-0 lead late in the game.
Seth Pinkerton relieved Gauthier in the eighth inning after another stellar outing by the captain. Pinkerton, earning his first-ever appearance as a Hawk, retired the side.
Billy Devito saw his first action of the season, shutting the door in the ninth and picking up a K to seal the deal. Hartford mashed 18 hits and Gauthier picked up his second win of the season, as the Hawks won 12-0.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
The Hawks have been lethal with two outs in the inning, and after today's matchup, Hartford has scored 22 of their 26 runs on the year with two away in the frame.
Hartford chased away the Highlander hurlers early and often, forcing each of three Radford pitchers to go only three innings. Every Radford pitcher surrendered at least two runs in their outings, with starter Dylan Nelson getting hit for six runs and seven hits in three innings of work.
Ostberg continues to tear it up at the plate, as the current hits leader for the Hawks now stands at 10 base knocks spread all over the diamond through his first four games.
Hartford spread the wealth again offensively, with Wilson, MacKinnon, DelDebbio, Ostberg, Bengtson, Ward, and Ruch all collecting at least two hits on the day. Wilson and Ostberg added two RBIs apiece, and Bengston drove in three.
Gauthier was absolutely dominant on the mound, going seven strong innings and allowing just one hit. He did not walk anyone in the contest, and the seven innings were the deepest he's gone in an outing without surrendering a base-on-balls.
Gauthier now holds a 0.56 ERA on the year, and has more strikeouts (10) than hits allowed (8) for the season.

NEXT UP:
The Hawks take the diamond again tomorrow at 2 p.m. to play in game two of the three-games series. RHP David Drouin will make his first start since 2014, and Radford will send LHP Zack Ridgely to the mound. Follow along with live stats on HartfordHawks.com and on Twitter @HartfordBASE.
