THE LEAD:

The University of Hartford men's lacrosse team's offense exploded on Saturday afternoon, as it downed visiting Binghamton, 17-9, at Al-Marzook Field at Alumni Stadium. Five Hawks netted multiple goals on the afternoon, led by junior Alec Brown who had a career day with five scores.

Juniors Jaedon Henderson and Doug Biondi joined sophomore Justin Huggins with two goals apiece, while freshman Dylan Jinks led all scorers with seven points on five assists, a career best, and a pair of scores. Matthew Kaser netted a hat trick for Binghamton, while Zach Scaduto paced the squad with four points behind one goal and three helpers.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Early in the game, the Hawks spotted the Bearcats a 2-1 edge with 12:16 left in the first, but that would prove to be the only lead that Binghamton would hold for the remainder of the game.
  • Less than two minutes later, Brown found the back of the net for his first of five goals on the afternoon. That sparked a 3-0 spurt that put the Hawks in front by a 4-2 count with 3:45 remaining. Binghamton put together a spurt of its own, as it tied up the contest at four goals apiece with 2:18 to go using a pair of unanswered scores, but with eight seconds left to play before the end of the stanza, Jinks struck to make it a 5-4 Hawks' advantage heading into the second.
  • Hartford built off the momentum of Jinks' quarter-ending goal in the second, as it rallied for three-straight goals from senior Chris Duffy, Huggins and Biondi to extend its lead to 8-4 with 8:55 left before halftime. The two squads would exchange a pair of goals two times before the end of the quarter as the Hawks took a 10-6 advantage into the intermission.
  • The third quarter was all Hartford. Sparked by another goal from Jinks 48 seconds in, the Hawks opened the session with a 4-0 run to take an eight-goal lead at 14-6 with 10:06 left. The final three goals of that spurt were scored in a hurry, as Henderson, sophomore Dylan Protesto and freshman Alex Borja each found the back of the net during a 23 second stretch. Henderson and Protesto's goals were just five seconds apart.
  • The Bearcats managed to trim their deficit down to seven at 15-8 before the end of the quarter by scoring two of the final three goals of the stanza, but Brown would open the fourth with a pair of scores to give Hartford its largest lead of the game -- a nine-goal cushion -- heading down the stretch.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • The Hawks' 17 goals netted against the Bearcats are the most in a game since the squad recorded 19 in a win at Richmond in 2014.
  • Hartford dominated nearly every statistical category on Saturday as it held advantages in shots (35-26), ground balls (30-18) and faceoff wins (25-5).
  • Protesto and rookie Zach Elkinson accounted for 60.0 percent of the Hawks 30 ground balls with 10 and eight, respectively.
  • Protesto continued his dominant run at the faceoff X by winning 18-of-22 duels, good for 81.8 percent. Spencer Andrews added a solid effort as well, as he won all but one of his eight faceoffs (87.5%).
  • Duffy, a senior close defender, and Borja, a rookie midfielder, added their first career goals in the triumph. Biondi also enjoyed a career day for the Hawks, as he added three assists to his two goals for a personal-best five points.
  • Huggins has been on a tear as of late for the Hawks, as 11 of his 15 goals this season have been scored over the last three games.
  • With one goal and an assist, sophomore Griffin Feiner eclipsed the 50-point mark on his career.
  • Both teams' goalies were quiet, as the game saw just three total saves. Sophomore Ryan Vanderford, who earned his 13th career win for the Hawks, made one save while junior Evan Quinn registered one in the game's final 3:25.
  • Tanner Cosens recorded one save for the Bearcats.
