THE LEAD:

A big third quarter led the Stony Brook Seawolves past the University of Hartford men's lacrosse team in both teams' regular-season finale on Saturday afternoon. The Seawolves ended the decisive stanza with six unanswered scores to erase a 7-6 Hawks' advantage and run away with the game.

Leading Hartford was junior Alec Brown, who netted each of his four goals in the first half. Sophomore Justin Huggins added three points on two goals and an assist. Matt Schultz had five goals for the Seawolves, including two in the third quarter.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Each side traded four goals apiece to start the game, as the Hawks and Seawolves were tied up at 4-4 with 9:33 left to play in the second. Neither side gained more than a one-goal edge, until Stony Brook strung together back-to-back scores from Jeff Reh and Eastwood to take a 6-4 edge with 4:15 remaining in the half.
  • But the Hawks quickly overcame their two-goal deficit, and made it a new game at the half. Junior Alec Brown and sophomore Griffin Feiner each reached the back of the net less than a minute apart at the 2:30 and 1:34 marks to tie up the contest at 6-6 at the break.
  • Out of the intermission, the Hawks kept their momentum going. Seconds after Hartford won the opening faceoff, freshman Dylan Jinks fed Huggins to put Hartford in front by a 7-6 count.
  • The Seawolves responded, though. Ryan Blitzer tied up the game with 11:17 left in the third before Jake Sichenzia put the advantage back in the hands of Stony Brook at 8-7 with 8:42 to go in the period. The offense would continue for the Seawolves, as they closed out the third with four more unanswered goals to take a 12-7 lead.
  • Stony Brook kept the pedal to the medal in the fourth and pushed ahead, 15-7, behind a 3-0, quarter-opening run. With 2:24 remaining, junior Jaedon Henderson would end the Hawks' scoring drought – and a 9-0 Seawolves' run – with Hartford's final score of the game.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Sophomore Ryan Vanderford made 12 saves between the pipes for his fifth-straight game with double-digit saves.
  • With two points (one goal, one assist), Henderson improves his career total to 90.
  • The Hawks committed just eight turnovers, but were outshot by the Seawolves, 51-21.

NEXT ON TAP:
The Hawks' postseason fate will be determined after the final game of the 2016 America East regular-season is played, which features Binghamton at Vermont at 7 p.m.

UAlbany and Stony Brook have secured two of the four America East Championship berths, while Hartford, Binghamton and Vermont are still in contention for the remaining two spots.  The America East Championship, which will be played at top-seeded UAlbany, begins with the semifinals on Thursday, May 5.
