Women's Soccer Defeats Manhattan in Season Debut

THE BASICS:

RESULT: Hartford 1, Manhattan 0
RECORDS: Hartford (1-0); Manhattan (0-1)
LOCATION: Gaelic Park (Riverdale, N.Y.)

THE LEAD:

A first-half goal by Kaila Lozada proved to be the difference-maker for the University of Hartford women's soccer team, as the Hawks held on for the 1-0 win in at Manhattan on Friday. Lozada put the finishing touches on a pass from senior Tori Tripp from outside of the box in the 28th to help Hartford pick up its fourth-straight win in season-openers.

With the win, Hartford head coach John Natale pushed his total to 104 to become the winningest coach in program history.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Hawks were the aggressors first, as sophomore Julia Carr forced Jaspers' keeper Olivia Printy into action in the 21st minute. Manhattan was quick to pose a threat, as Hartford keeper Jessica Jurg came away with a save on a shot by Dylan Burns just over a minute later.
  • At the 27:54 mark, Lozada broke open the match with what proved to be the game's lone goal. From just outside of the box on the right side, she booted a pass from Tripp past Printy to make it a 1-0 Hawks' lead heading into the break.
  • Possession fell in favor of Hartford in the second half, as the Hawks held a 6-3 advantage in shots during that stretch. Each keeper recorded one save apiece in the final stanza, with Jurg making a pivotal stop in the 80th minute on a shot by Lizzy Carlson.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Jurg was solid in net, making stops on each of the three shots she faced for the Hawks. The clean sheet is the 24th of her career.
  • The Hawks held advantages over the Jaspers in shots (11-6) and corner kicks (4-2).
  • For the Jaspers, Printy came up with four saves between the posts.

NEWS & NOTES:
  • With the season-opening victory, 13th-year head coach John Natale passed Austin Daniels (103-35-6) in the record books and became the winningest coach in Hartford history with a career record of 104-86-38.
  • With four-straight wins in season-opening games, the Hawks are now unbeaten in their last six season debuts with a 4-0-2 mark since 2011.
  • Lozada became the second-straight rookie to net a goal in her college debut, as sophomore Julia Carr accomplished the feat in her first game as a collegian against Siena last year.
