Volleyball Bested in Dartmouth Invite Finale

THE BASICS:

THE LEAD:
Katy Henchy and Paulina Modestow each delivered nine kills, but an efficient offensive attack led Dartmouth to a 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-15) victory over the Hartford volleyball team on Saturday night. The match wrapped up the Dartmouth Invitational, where the Hawks went 1-2.
 
Abby Kott led the Big Green with 10 kills, as the home squad hit .276 as a unit. Corinne Cox and Zoe Leonard each delivered four aces as well in the match.
 
For the Hawks, Astrid Mangual posted 23 assists and 11 digs, while Modestow added 11 digs as well. Henchy was named to the all-tournament team for her efforts on the weekend.

SET-BY-SET
• Dartmouth jumped out to an early 5-1 lead in the opening stanza, and the teams traded rallies to result in a 9-5 score. Hartford then went on a run, delivering four-straight points to knot things up at 9-9. From there it was back-and-forth to a 14-12 Big Green lead, before Dartmouth delivered another rally to pull ahead 17-12. From there, the home squad was able to finish off the first set, 25-18.
• The second saw the Hawks open up the game's first lead, 3-1, on kills by Henchy and Modestow as well as an ace from Mangual. After the Big Green knotted the set up at 7-7, Hartford responded with three straight, the last on another Modestow kill. Dartmouth cut the lead to 19-18, then rallied for four straight to garner a 22-19 lead, and hung on for a 25-22 triumph.
• In the third, the Hawks took an early 6-5 lead on a Rachel Moll kill. But Dartmouth battled back, slowly increasing the lead to seven at 19-12. The Hawks were able to cut it to 20-15 after a Modestow kill, but Dartmouth was able to regain the momentum and take a 25-15 victory to seal the match.

UP NEXT:
The Hawks will head to New York City to take part in the Columbia Tournament, hosted by the Lions. Hartford will take on Fordham on Friday, Sept. 16, and Columbia and Providence on Saturday, Sept. 17, at the event.
