THE LEAD:
Â
The fourth-seeded University of Hartford women's soccer team came up short to fifth-seeded Stony Brook on Thursday, dropping a 2-0 decision in the quarterfinal round of the America East Championship. Allyson Baner scored the game-winner for the Seawolves, who will take on top-seeded Stony Brook in the semifinals on Sunday.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Stony Brook came out of the gates firing, missing just wide in the fifth minute before sending a shot off the crossbar in the seventh minute.
- At the 10:53 mark, Stony Brook reached the scoreboard on its third corner kick of the match. Sam Goodwin took the honors on the set piece, and Baner headed in the go-ahead tally from point-blank range to put the Seawolves in front.
- A series of touch passes from sophomores Sierra Stone and Bridgette Alexander nearly led to the equalizer for the Hawks in the 30th minute. Setting up Julia Carr at the top of the box, the junior missed just wide of the far post. That proved to be Hartford's best opportunity of the half, as the Hawks took a one-goal deficit into the break.
- Hartford came out strong in the second half, but Stony Brook goalkeeper Elizabeth Manner came away with clutch saves to keep the Hawks off the scoreboard.
- In the 74th minute, Christen Cahill tacked on an insurance goal for the Seawolves, scoring on a strike to the near post from 10 yards out. Chelsea Deponte was credited with the assist.
- The Hawks strung together a series of looks within a 32-second stretch, but Manner preserved the shutout with three-straight saves. Making the save and forcing a corner on a header from sophomore Skylar Vitiello, Carr's blast on the ensuing set piece was turned away by the Seawolves' keeper. Moments later, sophomore Ashley Claud had a chance on the deflection, but her attempt was also saved by Manner.
- Down the stretch, Hartford had one final shot at cutting into its deficit, but Vitiello's long blast from 35 yards out was drilled off the crossbar.
Â
INSIDE THE NUMBERS & NOTES:

- The Hawks' appearance in the quarterfinals marked the eighth-straight for Hartford.
