THE LEAD:

The University of Hartford women's soccer team battled defending America East Champion UAlbany to a 1-1 draw on Thursday evening at Bob Ford Field at Tom & Mary Casey Stadium. Behind sophomore Bridgette Alexander's equalizer in the 80th minute, the Hawks, who moved to 2-1-1 with the tie, erased a halftime deficit to come away with the point in America East action.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Great Danes nearly struck in the 15th minute after Kimberly Dieroff and Sophia Eifler each hit the crossbar within a stretch of seven seconds. Six minutes later, the Great Danes used a set piece to take the lead in the 21st minute. Miranda Badovinac directed a feed towards the left post, and Vivian Vega snuck a shot past a diving Maia Perez from eight yards out to put the Great Danes in front.
  • Just over five minutes after UAlbany's score, freshman Gabriela Gamory had a chance to draw the Hawks even in the 26th minute. She snuck a shot to the near post, but Andrea Leitner was in place to make the save for the Great Danes.
  • After a second half that saw the field tilt in favor of Hartford, the Hawks broke through the Great Danes' defense to tie up the match with just over 10 minutes remaining. From 50 yards away, sophomore Madison Stabile booted a long ball into the top corner of the box. Tracking down the pass, Alexander turned and used her left foot to beat UAlbany's keeper with a shot to the near post.
  • Both sides each had looks at the go-ahead tally in the closing minutes of regulation. Sophomore Julia Carr drove a shot just wide for Hartford with eight minutes left before Mariah Williams' 1-on-1 shot from point-blank range was stopped by Perez with 81 seconds left to force overtime.
  • Momentum shifted in favor of UAlbany in both overtime sessions, with the Great Danes holding a 6-1 advantage in shots. But Hartford held off the Great Danes' attack to come away with the tie.
