Hawks Hang Tough in Setback to Syracuse

THE BASICS:

RESULT: Syracuse 75, Hartford 63
RECORDS: Hartford (1-3); Syracuse (3-0)
LOCATION: The Carrier Dome (Syracuse, N.Y.)

THE LEAD:

The University of Hartford women's basketball team put up a fight on Monday morning, but Syracuse came away with a 75-63 win in front of more than 5,000 children on School Day at the Carrier Dome. A season-best five Hawks scored in double figures, led by senior Darby Lee, who had 15 points.

Tiana Mangakahia recorded a double-double to lead the Orange, pacing the squad with 17 points while adding a game-best 10 assists. Gabrielle Cooper added 15 points on five three-pointers for the Orange, who kept their undefeated record intact and moved to 3-0 on the season.

FIRST HALF:

The Hawks fell behind early, but four three-pointers – including two from junior Alexia Douglas – fueled a 12-5 run that closed the gap to 13-12 with 4:15 to go in the first. Hartford remained within arms reach before an 8-0 Syracuse run extended the Orange lead to 24-14 at the end of the quarter.

Senior Janelle Harrison opened the second frame with a three-pointer for Hartford, but the shots began to fall for the Orange, who extended their lead with three consecutive triples. Powered by an 11-4 run, Syracuse took a 42-30 advantage into the halftime break.

SECOND HALF:

Hartford refused to go down easy in the second half. With 2:14 left to play in the game, Lee pulled the Hawks within 10 after converting on an old-fashioned three-point play on an up-and-under move to the rim. But Syracuse maintained the margin down the stretch to record its third-straight victory.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Drilling three three-pointers, Douglas recorded her first double-figure scoring game in a Hartford uniform with 10 points.
  • Junior Lindsey Abed and Harrison added 12 points apiece while junior Kelly Douglass rounded out the Hawks' double-figure scorers with a season-best 10 points.
  • The Hawks forced Syracuse into 18 turnovers, scoring 18 points off of those miscues.
  • Miranda Drummond and Digna Stratmane each finished in double figures in rebounding with 10 and 11, respectively, as the Orange outrebounded the Hawks, 51-32.

NEXT ON TAP:
The next two dates of Hartford's four-game road trek will bring the Hawks to Florida for the FIU Thanksgiving Tournament. The Hawks' trip to the Sunshine State begins on Saturday, Nov. 25, against Charleston Southern.
