THE LEAD:
Â
Redshirt-junior John P. Carroll scored a game-best 21 points on Sunday, but a hot second half led visiting Wagner past the University of Hartford men's basketball team, 72-50. The Seahawks, who knocked down 10 three-pointers in the win, used a 15-3 run in the second stanza to pull away from the Hawks.
Wagner, which led from start-to-finish, was led by 17 points from Blake Francis. Devin Leggeons and JoJo Cooper rounded out the Seahawks' top scorers with 14 and 13 points, respectively, while junior
Jason Dunne recorded his fourth-straight game in double figures in the losing effort with 15 points. Â
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- A hot start from long range allowed Wagner to jump out to an early lead. The Seahawks connected from downtown six times in the first 12 minutes, with Francis' second triple putting the visiting team in front, 25-13.
- Wagner got into foul trouble, allowing Hartford to chip away at its deficit from the free-throw line. The Hawks went 10-of-13 from the charity stripe in the half, and pulled within two at 30-28 using a 6-0 spurt that included a 4-of-4 effort from the line
- A layup by Jamar Brown in the final seconds would push the Wagner edge to four at halftime. Â
- After being held without a three in the first half, Hartford started to convert from behind the arc in the opening minutes of the second. With 15:42 remaining, Dunne, who knocked down a triple to open the second stanza, pulled the Hawks within a point at 37-36 with his second three of the afternoon.
- But Wagner went on another run, scoring 15 of the game's next 18 points to regain a double-figure lead at 52-39 at the 7:45 mark. The Seahawks' offense continued to roll, as they pushed ahead by 16 points with just over four minutes remaining.
Â
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Wagner was hot from long range, converting on 10-of-19 three-pointers for 52.6 percent. From the field, the Seahawks finished the game shooting 48.0 percent (24-of-50) to Hartford's 27.5 percent (14-of-51).
- Blake, Liggeons and Cooper combined for nine long range makes as Wagner outscored the Hawks, 30-9, from behind the arc.
- The Hawks' 14 made field goals marked the fewest by Hartford in a game this season
- Hartford's turnovers were an Achilles' heel for the team, as 16 miscues led to 24 points for Wagner on the other end.
- The Hawks did have a solid outing at the free-throw line, recording season-bests in makes (19) and attempts (23) for an 82.6 percent effort.
- Carroll shot 6-of-15 from the field and 9-of-10 from the free-throw line to record his third 20-plus point contest of the season. He has scored in double figures in all but one game this year.
- With three blocks, Carroll registered a new career high in the category.

NEXT ON TAP:
The Hawks take on their third-straight opponent from the NEC – and fourth on the season – on Thursday, Nov. 30, when they travel to LIU Brooklyn for a 7 p.m. tip. The contest will serve as a rematch, as Hartford fell to the Blackbirds by two points in the opening game of the 2017 Jamaica Classic earlier this month.
