WEST HARTFORD, CONN- Student-athletes from the University of Hartford recently traveled to Laurel Elementary School, in Bloomfield, to teach young students in the community. The effort was coordinated through the Junior Achievement program in Connecticut.
Members of the men's lacrosse, women's lacrosse, baseball, softball, track & field, golf and cheerleading teams worked with children from kindergarten through second grade in a day of learning and fun.
"The student-athletes are great role models for the younger students. They remember the students long after the day and love interacting with them," JA Education Manager of the North District Desiree Roberts said.
JA focuses on making students financially responsible, prepared for the workforce and entrepreneurially savvy. JA provides a powerful learning experience for young people for two reasons:
- JA programs are delivered by volunteers from business and the community, who work hand-in-hand with classroom teachers. These volunteers inspire the students through their real-world experience.
- The curriculum consists of hands-on activities that allow the students to learn by doing. Designed by national experts in learning, activities are engaging, fun and comprehensive. All JA lessons correlate to the state curriculum standards.
"One of the biggest benefits is the positive exposure for both of the student athletes and for the elementary students to learn lessons outside the curriculum with a fun atmosphere,"
Roberts said.
Junior Achievement Connecticut is always looking for volunteers to interact and educate children in our local communities. Visit
