THE LEAD:
The University of Hartford men's lacrosse team dropped its season opener, 12-5, against Boston University on Saturday afternoon. The Hawks, the reigning America East champions, struggled offensively and couldn't seem to find an answer for BU's Cal Dearth, who finished with five goals. Five different players accounted for Hartford's five goals.
THE TURNING POINT:
BU opened the game on a 3-0 run and Hartford bounced back with consecutive goals, cutting the deficit to 3-2. The Terriers took over from there, though, scoring six of the next seven. The stretch included a 5-0 BU run that lasted more than 15 minutes.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Terriers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter on goals from Dearth, Chad Bell and John MacLean.
- The Hawks answered with back-to-back goals by Justin Huggins and Alec Brown, slashing the deficit to 3-2.
- The Terriers took a commanding lead in the third quarter on the strength of a 5-0 run that stretched from before halftime.
- Jaedon Henderson netted the Hawks' first goal of the second half with just more than a minute to play in the third quarter, cutting BU's lead to 9-3
- The Terriers scored three of the game's final four goals, including another two goals from Dearth, who finished with a game-high five.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Huggins, Brown, Henderson, Griffin Feiner and Doug Biondi scored for the Hawks. Feiner added two assists to lead Hartford with three points.
- BU held a slim edge in shots (37-36) and ground balls (30-24). Hartford also racked up more penalties, finishing with five to the Terriers' two.
- The 12 goals were the most Hartford has allowed in non-conference regular season play since surrendering 16 to Bryant in the Hawks' 2016 home opener.
- Hartford's five goals were the fewest since a 13-4 loss against Vermont on April 23, 2016.
NEXT ON TAP:
The Hawks will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 25, when they travel to take on Bryant. The Bulldogs opened the season with a 17-10 victory against Manhattan, before falling 9-8 at Bucknell. Bryant lost, 7-6, in its home opener against Providence on Saturday.
