THE LEAD:
Four Hawks registered multiple goals on Saturday afternoon, led by a three-goal effort from junior
Justin Huggins, but the University of Hartford men's lacrosse team was unable to hold off UMass on Saturday, falling 12-10 at Al-Marzook Field. Huggins added a pair of assists to finish match a career-high with five points while senior
Alec Brown led all scorers with a career-high six points behind two goals and four helpers.
Â
Tyler Bogart led the Minutemen with three goals and an assist, as UMass snapped Hartford's two-game winning streak with the victory.
Â
THE TURNING POINT:
The Hawks held an 8-6 edge with 11:44 remaining in the third, but saw that lead disappear thanks to a flurry of UMass goals. The Minutemen used a five-goal run extending into the final quarter to erase their deficit and take an 11-8 lead within the first 17 seconds of the fourth.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Hawks spotted UMass a quick goal 56 seconds out of the opening faceoff, but answered with a 5-1 run to take a three-goal edge. Huggins and Dylan Jinks delivered two-straight scores at the 3:27 and 2:05 marks before Feiner's second man-up goal of the contest 19 seconds into the second quarter stretched the lead to 5-2.
- UMass closed the gap to one goal with back-to-back scores from Buddy Carr and Grant Consoletti, but another Hartford man-up tally, this one from Brown with 5:14 left in the quarter, closed out the first-half scoring while pushing the Hawks' advantage back to a pair at 6-4.
- Beginning the third with another man-up opportunity, Jinks capitalized 17 seconds into the period to match the Hawks' largest lead of the game at 7-4. But UMass responded by scoring five of the quarter's final six goals, sparking an eventual 5-0 run with three-unanswered to end the third.
- Five different Minutemen contributed to UMass' game-deciding rally. With 12 seconds left in the third, Bogart gave the Minutemen their first lead since early in the first quarter (1-0) before Shane Rinkus and Noah Rak pushed the advantage to three with back-to-back scores six seconds apart at the 14:49 and 14:43 marks.
- Hartford's defense silenced UMass until the final minute of the game, allowing the Hawks to chip away at their 11-8 deficit. Two-straight scores from Brown and Trevor O'Brien closed the gap to one with 4:40 left, but a Hartford turnover inside of the two-minute mark eventually led to a Dylan Gruder goal, which sealed the win with 15 seconds left.
Â
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Hartford's man-up unit was at its finest on Saturday, converting on each of its five extra-man opportunities. Four of the Hawks' first seven scores of the game were man-up goals.
- Defensively, the Hawks' man-down unit held the Minutemen scoreless in their two extra-man opportunities.
- UMass' Rak had a solid outing inside of the faceoff circle, winning 18-of-24 duels while collecting 10 ground balls.
- The Minutemen also held advantages in shots (44-28), shots on goal (28-14) and ground balls (32-18). Saturday's contest marked the first time in four games and just the second time this season that Hartford did not control the ground ball and faceoff categories.
- Jinks and Feiner rounded out the Hawks' multi-goal scorers, recording two goals and one assist apiece.
- Between the posts, Vanderford came one save shy of matching his career high with 16 stops. His counterpart, D.J. Smith, turned away four shots for the Minutemen.
