Behind a second-place finish from senior
Cora Bernier, the University of Hartford women's golf team came out on top on Sunday at the first annual New England Intercollegiate Golf Association (NEIGA) Women's Championship. A rainout turned the tournament into a one-day event on the Starboard Course at The Captains Course in Brewster, Mass.
TOURNAMENT HIGHLIGHTS:
- Bernier posted the tournament's top mark among all Division I golfers, firing a 7-over 79 to pave the way for the Hawks. Among all golfers in the field, which also included Division II squads Assumption and the College of St. Rose, she came one-stroke shy of Catherine French (Assumption), who carded a 6-over 78.
- Hartford ran away with the team title on Sunday, finishing with a team score of 47-over 335, 15 strokes ahead of Fairfield (350) and 28 ahead of Holy Cross (75). Â Among the tournament's five-team field, the Hawks' team score was 25 strokes ahead of Assumption, the Division II top finisher.
- Junior Brittany Ferrante and freshman Caitlin Maralack each fired a 13-over 85 to finish in a tie for second place among Division I golfers and tied for fourth among the entire field.
- Rounding out the scoring for the Hawks was senior Meghan Ryan. Carding a 14-over 86, she posted the fourth-best Division I score, which also stood as the fifth lowest mark of the tournament.
- Colette Schmidt, a senior, turned in a 26-over 98 to place 13th in the Division I tournament. Overall, she took 18th place.
