Bearcats Come From Behind to Knock Off Softball

THE BASICS:

RESULT: Binghamton 5, Hartford 3
LOCATION: Hartford Softball Field (West Hartford, Conn.)
RECORDS: Binghamton (16-19, 6-2 America East); Hartford (3-33, 0-8)

THE LEAD:
Madison Hilimire went 2-for-3 and drove in a pair of runs, but Binghamton was able to come from behind to knock off the Hartford softball team, 5-3, in the series opener between the two teams.

The game was originally slated to be a doubleheader, but rain in the area forced the teams to play a single game on Saturday and alter Sunday's schedule to a twinbill.

Elizabeth Newkirk also had two hits for Hartford, going 2-for-4 with a run scored, in a losing effort. Bianca Ross went for the complete game, allowing five runs, but only two earned, to be credited with the loss.

Stephanie Bielec went 4-for-4 with two runs scored for the Bearcats, while Sara Herskowitz had a 2-for-3 day. Rayn Gibson went the full seven innings to collect a complete-game victory.

HOW THEY SCORED:
• Binghamton came through with a run in the top of the first with an unearned tally.
• The Hawks came roaring back in the bottom of the first, tying the score on a Danielle DeMarco RBI groundout that scored Newkirk.
• Hartford followed with two more runs when Hilimire blistered a double to left field that plated Lexi Wilkerson and Bianca Ross.
• But Binghamton rallied in the top of the third, plating a three-spot on four hits and a pair of errors to regain the lead, 4-3.
• The Bearcats delivered an insurance run in the top of the seventh with a triple followed by an RBI single to make the lead 5-3.

UP NEXT:
The Hawks and Bearcats square off with a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at noon. Prior to first pitch, Hartford will pay homage to its four seniors – DeMarco, Marisa Ferguson, Wilkerson and Meghan Wynn – who will play their final home conference games Sunday afternoon.
