Men's Lacrosse Unable to Hold Off First-Place Binghamton

THE BASICS:

RESULT: Binghamton 10, Hartford 9
RECORDS: Hartford (4-6, 1-2 AE); Binghamton (9-1, 3-0 AE)
LOCATION: Bearcats Sports Complex (Vestal, N.Y.)

THE LEAD:
The University of Hartford men's lacrosse team was unable to hold off first-place Binghamton on Saturday afternoon, as the Hawks dropped a 10-9 decision in Vestal, N.Y, on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Dylan Jinks scored three goals in the losing effort, recording a hat trick for the third time this season.

Stephen Petrelli matched a game-high in scoring with three goals for the Bearcats, who were fueled by a 13-of-23 effort at the faceoff X by Austin Macchi. Binghamton improved to 3-0 in America East action with its fifth-straight win.

THE TURNING POINT:
After three-straight goals erased a two-goal deficit and put Hartford on top, 9-8, with 3:55 to go, Binghamton answered back and spoiled the Hawks' comeback bid by ending the game with two-straight tallies. Tom Moore drew the two teams even at 9-9 with 2:28 to go, before a goal by Joe Grossi with 1:56 remaining proved to be the difference in the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Griffin Feiner struck first just 2:09 into the game to open up the scoring and give the Hawks the early advantage. But Binghamton put together a rally, as four different Bearcats scored over a nine-minute stretch to put the home team up by a 4-1 count with 65 seconds left in the first.
  • Hartford turned things around in the second quarter, though, and behind a solid defensive effort, the Hawks turned their three-goal deficit into a 6-4 lead heading into the halftime break. Limiting the Bearcats to just four shot attempts during that frame, two of which were saved by goalie Ryan Vanderford, Hartford scored five-unanswered goals to take its first advantage of the game.
  • Jinks knotted up the contest at 4-all with 8:09 remaining before halftime on his first goal of the afternoon before seniors Jaedon Henderson and Alec Brown each struck within a 50-second stretch at 2:07 and 1:17 to provide the Hawks with the two-goal edge heading into the halftime break.
  • Following nine scoreless minutes of action out of the intermission, momentum swung back in favor of the Bearcats. Petrelli delivered back-to-back goals to make it a 6-6 game with 4:44 left in the third before Thomas McAndrew put the finishing touches on a feed from Joe Licata to give Binghamton the one-goal edge with 3:21 to go in the quarter.
  • Griffin Konen extended the Bearcats' lead to two just 66 seconds into the final stanza. But the Hawks clawed their way back again, delivering three-straight goals to reclaim the lead at 9-8 with 3:55 left. Jinks, who got the run going at the 13:04 mark, followed junior Will Dulin's equalizer with the go-ahead tally, his 16th goal of the season.
  • Hartford's comeback bid was spoiled by the Bearcats, though, as Binghamton scored the final two goals of the game to claim the one-goal win despite three attempts for the equalizer from the Hawks in the final minute.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Four Hawks tallied three points in the game, with Henderson and Feiner finishing with two goals apiece. Dulin, who handed out a team-best two assists, also recorded three points in the outing.
  • Both teams were perfect in clearing opportunities, as the Hawks were successful in each of their 12 attempts while the Bearcats posted a 7-for-7 effort.
  • Hartford held a 34-32 edge in shots, while the ground ball battle was even at 15 apiece.
  • Tanner Cosens finished with a game-best 11 saves for the Bearcats, including a key save on the potential go-ahead tally in the game's final minute on a shot by Griffin Feiner.

NEXT ON TAP:
The Hawks have three consecutive road games on the docket, beginning with a Saturday afternoon matchup against UMass Lowell on April 15. Opening faceoff between the two brands of Hawks is set for 1 p.m.
