THE LEAD:
Â
The University of Hartford women's soccer team took down Fordham, 2-1, on Jack Coffey Field on Sunday afternoon. The Hawks built a 2-0 lead in the match behind goals from sophomores
Kaila Lozada (40') and
Sierra Stone (69') before Brooke Salmon put the Rams on the board on a penalty kick with 5:08 remaining.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Momentum landed in favor of the Hawks for most of the first half, as sophomore Julia Carr and freshman Nissa Pereira generated scoring threats for the visiting team. In the 18th minute, Carr's shot from outside of the 18-yard box went just wide of the far post before Fordham keeper Kelly LaMorte rejected Pereira's shot on target in the 39th minute.
- Less than a minute after Pereira's attempt, the Hawks got on the scoreboard in the 40th minute thanks to a Lozada penalty kick. The forward capitalized on the Rams' defensive miscue and sent Hartford into the halftime break the one-goal advantage by slipping a shot to the left of LaMorte at the 39:20 mark.
- Hartford's attack continued to apply pressure on Fordham's back line out of the intermission. Carr forced LaMorte into action on a pair of scoring opportunities in the 50th and 63rd minute before Stone put another one through the Rams' defense in the 69th minute to double the Hawks' lead. The midfielder's third goal of the season came from point-blank range on a pass from Carr.
- The Hawks' defense kept the Rams' attack at bay until a foul inside of the box led to a successful penalty kick from Salmon in the 94th minute. Despite Salmon closing the gap to one, Hartford would hold off Fordham's comeback attempt, as Hawks' keeper Maia Perez easily scooped up a pair of long shots in the final two minutes.
Â
INSIDE THE NUMBERS & NOTES:
- A rookie, Perez made eight saves between the posts to earn her third career win for the Hawks. Her counterpart, LaMorte, registered six stops for the Rams.
