THE BASICS:

THE LEAD:
Four Hawks registered four kills or more, but a strong effort on service by Connecticut lifted the Huskies past the Hartford volleyball team on Saturday in the final match of the Dog Pound Challenge. Freshman Brittany Braun was named to the all-tournament team for her efforts on the weekend.

Braun, Jenna Bridges and Katy Henchy each posted five kills for the Hawks, while Paulina Modestow added four without an error. Megan Scherer led the Hawks in both digs (7) and assists (14) in a losing effort.

Kayla Williams (14) and Kenya Cason (10) each finished with double-digit kills for UConn, while Williams led the squad with seven digs and four aces as well. The Huskies had 11 aces as a team to Hartford's four.

SET-BY-SET
• The Huskies came out quickly in the opening stanza, opening a 5-0 lead. Hartford rallied with three-straight points of its own in response, and continued to chip away to a 9-8 score after a Dacey Perez ace. But UConn was able to bounce back, building a 15-9 lead and holding on for the 25-13 victory.
• In the second, the Huskies got out to a fast start as well, beginning with a 9-2 advantage. The Hawks stemmed the tide and trimmed the lead to five on several occasions, but another UConn run put the lead up to 20-9. Hartford trimmed the lead to 22-15 after a Jordan Fuelling service ace, and got the lead down to five with a Bridges kill, but the Huskies finished off the set.
• The two teams came out even in the third set, with the Hawks taking a 7-6 lead after a Bridges ace. The squads traded points to 11-11, but the Huskies took charge at that point, using an 11-2 run for a 22-13 edge en route to a 25-17 win.
