Women's Soccer Falls to UAlbany in AE Semifinals

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Mariah Williams found the back of the net in 79th minute to lead No. 3 UAlbany past No. 2 Hartford, 1-0, in the semifinals of the America East Tournament on Sunday. The Great Danes will advance to the title match next weekend to face No. 4 UMass Lowell.

Sophomore Maia Perez and senior Hayley Nolan were each named to the All-Tournament Team from the Hawks, who were Regular-Season Champions for the fourth time in five seasons. Hartford, which won its most regular-season games since 2011, finishes the season with a 13-3-2 record, while UAlbany takes a 13-6-2 record into the title game.

  • The Hawks dodged a bullet early in the match when sophomore Gabriela Gamory knocked a ball by Gina Bracamonte away from the goal line to prevent a UAlbany goal in the 15th minute.
  • A tightly contested first half between the two teams saw the game remained deadlocked at 0-0 at the break.
  • In the 54th minute, junior Sierra Stone came inches away from putting the Hawks on the board. Her long blast from outside the 18-yard box was on target, but UAlbany keeper Andrea Leitner was in place to punch the ball over the crossbar.
  • Following more back-and-forth action, UAlbany broke through in the 79th minute after a Jasmine Colbert breakaway at midfield. Blasting a shot on goal from inside the 18, Perez came up with the clutch save, but the deflection landed at the feet of Williams, who tapped in the game-winner on the empty net from yards away.
  • The Hawks held a 10-7 edge in shots, while UAlbany held the advantage in corner kicks at 8-6.
