Lindsey Abed scored more than 20 points for the second straight game, but Hartford fell to Southern Illinois, 72-50, in the Hawks' opening game of the Southpoint Shootout, Friday afternoon.
Abed scored 22 points with four three-pointers, as Hartford falls to 2-4 on the season. Nicole Martin and Abby Brockmyer combined for 38 points to lead the Salukis, as they improve to 3-2 overall.
SOUTHERN ILLINOIS 72 HARTFORD 50
Southern Illinois came out strong in the first quarter, opening the game on a 21-8 run. Abed attempted to cut into the Salukis' lead right before the end of the period by knocking down a three with nine seconds remaining, but Southern Illinois responded, as Payton McCallister matched Abed with a three-pointer of her own at the buzzer for the 24-11 lead. The Salukis continued to add to its lead in the second quarter, as Southern Illinois went into halftime with the 38-19 lead.
The Salukis continued to add to its advantage in the second half, going ahead by as many as 28, as Southern Illinois wrapped up its third win of the season, 72-50.

- Abed is now six points from becoming the 18thplayer in program history to score 1,000 points.
- With her four three-pointers, Abed is now tied with Daphne Elliott for third all-time with 157 career three-pointers.
- Freshman Jordan McLemore shot 4-8 from the floor, registering a career-high 10 points.
- Southern Illinois dominated the paint, outscoring Hartford, 34-14 down low.
