Nationally Ranked Michigan State Slips Past Women's Hoops in OT

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. –Hartford women's basketball fell to No. 22/23 Michigan State 74-66 in overtime Sunday afternoon at Reich Family Pavilion.
 
Sophomore Jade Young had a team-high 18 points, as the Hawks fall to 5-6 on the season. Victoria Gaines registered a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds, as the Spartans Improve to 9-1 overall.

Midway through the second quarter, Michigan State capped off a 16-5 run with a layup from Gaines giving the Spartans a 25-12 lead with 4:55 remaining in the first half. Hartford responded, going on a 10-5 run right before the intermission to cut Michigan State's lead to seven (32-25). Freshman Jabria Ingram and junior Sierra DaCosta each knocked down three-pointers while Young had four of her team-leading 10 first half points over this stretch.
 
The Spartans held a six-point advantage heading into the fourth quarter before the Hawks came all the way back to tie the game, 57-57, after senior Lindsey Abed blocked a shot by Taryn McCutcheon and went the other way for the layup with just over a minute remaining. Michigan State took the lead once again, but DaCosta answered, scoring with 12 seconds left and forcing Hartford's first overtime game of the season. 
 
In the overtime period, the Hawks took their first lead of the game, as senior Kelly Douglass knocked down a three pointer, giving Hartford the 64-63 lead with 2:49 remaining. The Spartans, however, took control of the game, going on a 11-2 run to close out their ninth win of the season, 74-66.
 
NEWS AND NOTES
  • Young finished with a season-high 18 points, making 7-10 from the field and grabbing eight rebounds.
  • Today's game was Hartford's first overtime game since the Hawks topped Binghamton, 72-68, in the America East Quarterfinals last season.
  • This is the fifth time in Hartford's first 11 games that they have played a team ranked in the top-25 or receiving votes in the national poll. The Hawks strength of schedule is currently 74th in the country. 
  • With her 44 minutes played, Abed has logged 3,329 career minutes, passing Erika Messam (02-06) for seventh all-time in program history.
