THE LEAD:
Â
The University of Hartford men's basketball team came up short to visiting UAlbany, dropping a 69-63 decision to the Great Danes on Sunday. Junior
J.R. Lynch scored 19 points to lead the Hawks, who snapped a three-game winning streak with the defeat.
Â
Joe Cremo led all scorers with 21 points, while David Nichols and Travis Charles added 14 points apiece for UAlbany.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- Hartford led for the first 15 minutes of the game in a tightly contested first half. The Hawks went up by as many as six, but a Costa Anderson three-pointer followed by a Cremo jumper and a free throw from David Nichols gave the Great Danes their first lead of the game at 22-21 with 4:25 left.
- UAlbany ended the opening half by scoring 10 of the final 14 points, which resulted in the Great Danes taking a 32-28 edge into intermission.
- Five different players recorded buckets for the Hawks in the opening minutes of the second, and with 12:42 left, Lynch knotted up the score at 42-42 with a three-pointer.
- But UAlbany followed that triple with an 8-0 run that Hartford was unable to recover from, despite pulling within one possession several times down the stretch.
- With 1:44 remaining, junior Jason Dunne got a layup to fall through contact to close the gap to two at 58-56, but Anderson's third three-pointer of the game proved to be the turning point for the Great Danes. That trifecta was followed by five-straight points from the stripe, and with 33 seconds left, UAlbany led by 10 at 66-56.
- Despite the Hawks turning up the pressure in the backcourt, they only managed to cut the deficit in half (67-62) with eight seconds left before running out of time.
Â
