THE BASICS:
RESULT:  New Hampshire 76, Hartford 58
RECORDS: Hartford (14-12, 6-7 AE); New Hampshire (17-10, 8-6 AE)
LOCATION: Lundholm Gymnasium (Durham, N.H.)

THE LEAD:
A strong second half pushed New Hampshire past the visting University of Hartford women's basketball team, 76-58, in Lundholm Gymnasium on Wednesday morning.

New Hampshire senior Carlie Pogue posted a game-high 29 points, while senior Janelle Harrison led the way for the Hawks, scoring 17 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Hartford opened up strong, forcing a pair of early turnover to jump out to an early 8-2 lead. The Wildcats quickly responded, though, scoring the game's next 13 points to take a 15-8 advantage with 3:34 remaining in the opening quarter. The Hawks finished the period on a 10-4 run that cut the Wildcats' lead down to 19-18.
  • The Hawks and Wildcats exchanged the lead three times in the opening minute of the second period before senior Mary Pattison drained her second three of the game. That triple ignited a 9-3 Hawks' run that put them back up, 29-24. But five unanswered New Hampshire points knotted the game back up at 29 with 1:42 left in the opening half. With 20 second remaining, junior Lindsey Abed drained a three to give the Hawks an edge they would keep for the remainder of the half, as they led 32-31 at the break.
  • The opening five minute of the second half saw five lead changes and three ties before a Pogue layup with 5:20 remaining in the third gave the Wildcats a lead they would not relinquish. Hartford remained within striking distance until a 15-0 run by New Hampshire midway through of the fourth sealed the 76-58 decision.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS & NOTES:
  • The Hawks owned the advantage from behind the arc, hitting six threes compared to New Hampshire's three, while the Wildcats saw the advantage from the free-throw line (9-6).
  • Both team finished with 33 rebounds apiece.
  • With six points, senior Darby Lee now sits nine points away from the 1,000-career point milestone.
