Men's Hoops Sets Program Record in Regular-Season Wins in 67-57 Victory at Binghamton

THE BASICS:

RESULT: Hartford 67, Binghamton 57
RECORDS: Hartford (18-11, 11-4 AE); Binghamton (11-19, 2-13 AE)
LOCATION: The Events Center (Vestal, N.Y.)

THE LEAD:

Redshirt-junior John Carroll recorded a double-double on Saturday afternoon to lead the University of Hartford men's basketball team to a 67-57 win at Binghamton. Carroll recorded game-highs in scoring (23 points) and rebounds (15) as the Hawks extended their winning streak to four games, a season-best rally, with the victory.

With 18 victories and one game remaining, Hartford has set the program record for the most regular-season wins in a season in its Division I era. In addition, the Hawks' 11 America East wins are the most since 1997-98, when Hartford posted an 11-7 record in league play.

Fard Muhammad scored 14 points to lead Binghamton in the losing effort.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • A back-and-forth start to the game resulted in three ties and six lead changes within the first 20 minutes. Trailing by two points at 14-12, the Hawks took their largest lead of the half — a six-point edge with 7:27 to go — using an 11-3 run capped by a Carroll jumper.
  • But Binghamton stormed back and pushed ahead by four after scoring 10 unanswered points over the next three minutes. The lead would change hands two more times with a bucket by J.C. Show giving the Bearcats a 29-28 advantage at the break.
  • Hartford was solid to open the second half, scoring 11 of the first 14 points of the stanza to take its largest lead of the game at 39-32 with 14:04 to go. Junior Jason Dunne contributed five-straight points to that run, which was sparked by a Hassan Attia dunk in the opening seconds.
  • 9-3 to open the second
  • The Bearcats chipped away at their deficit, drawing the two teams even at 42-all with 11:59 to go on a Muhammed three-pointer before taking a one-point edge on an old-fashioned three-point play by Thomas Bruce three minutes later.
  • That proved to be the Bearcats' final advantage of the game, though, as five-straight points from Carroll fueled a 7-0 run that put the Hawks up, 54-48, with 6:59 remaining. Holding on to a five-point lead with 61 seconds left, Hartford ended the game on a 7-0 run behind four-straight makes from the charity stripe to seal the win.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE & NOTES:

  • Carroll went 7-of-13 (53.8%) from the field and 9-of-11 (81.8%) from the free-throw line.
  • Recording his fourth double-double of the season, Carroll's career-high 15 rebounds marked the most for a Hawk in a game this season.
