THE LEAD:
Â
Junior Lindsey Abed scored a game-high 19 points and senior Janelle Harrison recorded a double-double on Sunday to lead the University of Hartford women's basketball team to a 61-45 win at Reich Family Pavilion on Senior Day. The Hawks finish the regular season in sixth place in the America East and will take on the No. 3 seed — either Binghamton or Stony Brook — in the upcoming conference tournament.
Harrison, who grabbed a game-best 11 rebounds, joined sophomore Sierra DaCosta with 10 points to lead the offense. Imani Watkins led Binghamton with 14 points, while Alyssa James paced the Bearcats on the boards with eight.
Prior to Sunday's regular-season finale, Hartford honored Darby Lee, Mary Pattison and Harrison in a Senior Day Ceremony. The trio has led the Hawks to 60 wins and an America East Championship appearance in 2015.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- With Binghamton leading, 7-6, Hartford closed out the first quarter with nine unanswered points to take a 15-7 lead at the end of the stanza. DaCosta, who capped the run with a jumper, provided the eight-point spread with another jumper inside the final minute.
- The Hawks maintained the edge in the second quarter, despite the Bearcats pulling within one at 20-19 on a 7-0 spurt midway through. Hartford posted another solid finish, though, scoring eight of the final 11 points of the half to take a 28-22 advantage into intermission.
- Hartford pushed the lead to as many as 13 points in the third quarter, using a Pattison triple followed by a 1-of-2 effort from the line by Harrison to go up, 44-31, with 3:03 remaining.
- But the Bearcats made it a game again, going on a 14-2 run to pull within 46-45 with 5:22 left to play. Watkins had six of her points during that stretch.
- Hartford pulled itself together and ended the game on a 15-0 run to seal its second victory in as many outings. Harrison sparked that commanding ending with a putback, while Abed netted seven of her points within the game's final 3:36.
