THE LEAD:

The University of Hartford softball team split its doubleheader against Brown on Tuesday afternoon in West Hartford.

After only giving up one run in game one, senior Bianca Ross returned in game two, hitting the walk-off single while pitching one and one-third innings to pick up the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1
  • The Bears broke through in the third inning in the low scoring affair. Following a leadoff triple, Kaitlin Okimoto reached on a fielding error by the Hawks to drive in the game only run.
  • The Hartford bats were quiet in game one, only recording a pair of hits.

Game 2
  • The second game started out with a bang for both teams, with Brown's Cat Seitz blasting a three-run home run in the opening frame.
  • The Hawks quickly responded in the bottom of the first. Freshman Lily Sencer and junior Kylie Dazalla both worked walks to set up freshman Danielle Rocheleau who ripped an RBI single down the left field line to drive in Sencer. Later in the inning, sophomore Madison Hilimire drove Dazalla in with a sacrifice fly to left field, bringing the Hawks within one, 3-2.
  • Brown tallied one in the second before senior Elizabeth Newkirk sent a solo homer to left field to bring the Hawks back within one, 4-3.
  • A Bear two-run single in the fourth extended their lead to, 6-3.
  • The Hawks exploded for a four-run fourth. Freshman Jennifer Johnson and senior Brittany Wallace led off with back-to-back singles before sophomore Amber Mianti walked to load the bases. Sencer then reached on an error, scoring Johnson. Dazalla sent a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Mianti and Newkirk doubled scoring sencer to give the Hawks a 7-6 advantage.
  • Sophomore Jillian Fenton pinch ran for Wallace in the fifth inning, who doubled to center and later stole home to extend the Hawks lead to 8-6.
  • The Bears recorded back-to-back RBI doubles in the seventh to force extra innings.
  • Both squads exchanged runs in the eighth inning before Ross flew out to left field to score Newkirk and give the Hawks the 10-9 decision.
