Softball drops doubleheader at Manhattan

THE LEAD:
 
The University of Hartford softball team dropped both ends of its doubleheader against Manhattan in Riverdale on Tuesday Afternoon.
 
Freshman Danielle Rocheleau led the Hawks in game one, going 2-for-3, while fellow freshman Nicolette Barranger led the way in game two, going 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.  
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
 
Game 1
  • The Jaspers opened with a hot bat, following a leadoff double, Christine Gebhardt ripped a two-run homerun which was quickly followed up by a Lauren Pitney solo shot, putting Manhattan up 3-0. A RBI single and two-run double extended the Jasper lead to 7-0 at the end of one.  
  • Manhattan kept its bats going in the second, scoring four runs off five hits to extend its lead to 11-0.
  • The Hawk's best opportunity came in the fourth inning, loading the bases with no out, but Manhattan kept the Hawks at bay and held of for the 11-0 decision.
 
Game 2
  • Manhattan opened quickly once again in game two off a Kat Prevo RBI single, putting the Jaspers up 1-0.
  • The Hawks answered in the third inning as Barranger ripped a two-run double to left field, giving the Hawks a 2-1 lead.
  • After Manhattan knotted the game up at 2 in the sixth inning, senior Alex Saharek laced a solo homerun to left field before Barranger hit a two-run single through the left side to take a 5-2 lead.
  • Manhattan responded scored three runs of its own the seventh, forcing extra innings, where Briana Matazinsky's walk-off RBI single gave the Jaspers the 6-5 win.
 
NEXT ON TAP:
The Hawks will be off this weekend but will return to the diamond for their first home contest of the year, hosting in-state rival CCSU for a doubleheader on March 15th.
