Women's Lacrosse Falls at UMBC in Season Finale

THE BASICS:

RESULT: UMBC 24, Hartford 3
RECORDS: Hartford (1-12, 0-7 AE); UMBC (11-6, 3-4 AE)
LOCATION: UMBC Stadium (Baltimore, Md.)

THE LEAD:

The University of Hartford women's lacrosse team concluded its inaugural season with a 24-3 setback at UMBC on Saturday. Carolyn Jamison compiled a game-best nine-point outing for UMBC, leading all scorers with seven goals.

Freshmen Kaitlyn D'Andrea and Birdie Montes joined junior Billy McLaughlin with goals on the afternoon. McLaughlin and Montes each added assists to finish with two points apiece.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • A pair of unassisted scores within the game's first 2:20 put the Hawks on top early in the game. Freshman Kaitlyn D'Andrea found the back of the net 86 seconds in before junior Billy McLaughlin kept the rally going less than two minutes later.
  • But UMBC answered and took a four-goal lead behind a 6-0 run. Three scores within a span of 77 seconds erased the Hawks' advantage and made it a one-goal Retrievers' lead.
  • Carolyn Jamison struck three times during that stretch, which was halted by Birdie Montes' fifth goal of the season with 21:36 left. Despite slashing its lead in half at 6-3, Hartford was unable to come any closer, as UMBC ended the half on a 10-0 run to go up, 16-3, at the break.
  • The Retrievers' scoring spurt continued into the second, as they outscored the Hawks, 8-0, to come away with the 24-3 win.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE & NOTES:

  • Kalyn Crocetti and Rachel Walchuck also netted hat tricks for UMBC, finishing with three goals apiece.
  • Freshman Cassidy Hock registered double figures in saves for the second straight game, recording 11 saves in the defeat.
  • Kelsey Major earned the win for the Retrievers, allowing three goals while making three saves in 33:14.
  • UMBC held advantages in shots (46-6), ground balls (26-11) and draw controls (23-6). Freshman Kylyn Marshall registered three caused turnovers to pace the Hawks in the category.
  • The Hawks conclude their inaugural season with a 1-12 overall record.
