A sixth-inning rally lifts UMBC past the University of Hartford softball team, 11-5, on Sunday afternoon in West Hartford.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Hawks jumped out early as Freshman Nicolette Barranger reached on a fielder choice to shortstop, later driven in on an RBI double to right center by senior Elizabeth Newkirk to put the Hawks up 1-0 early.
- The Retrievers took a 2-1 lead in the third inning, scoring two on a pair of RBI singles.
- Senior Alex Saharek blasted a two-run homer in the fourth inning, driving in junior Kylie Dazalla who doubled to right center in the previous at-bat, giving the Hawks a 3-1 lead. The Hawks continued their big inning as Freshman Kiana Harris laced an RBI single, driving in senior Brittany Wallace, and sophomore Madison Hilimire blasted an RBI double down the left field line to drive Harris in and putting the Hawks up 5-2.
- UMBC boasted a big sixth inning, capitalizing on scoring seven runs off an RBI single, double and triple to take a 9-5 lead.
- The Retrievers added two more in the seventh, capitalizing on three Hawks errors to take the 11-5 decision.
