THE LEAD:

Highlighted by a 3-1 victory in game one, the University of Hartford softball team splits its final non-conference doubleheader with Army West Point on Wednesday afternoon in West Hartford.

Senior Pitcher Bianca Ross pitched an impressive 11.2 innings on the day, surrendering only five earned runs in that time. Freshman Lily Sencer went 5-for-7 in both games, driving in one and scoring twice.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1
  • The Hawks capitalized on Army mistakes early on, as freshman Danielle Rocheleau reached on an error by the second baseman, advanced to second on a single from Senior Elizabeth Newkirk before advancing to second and third on a wild pitch. Rocheleau was brought in by a passed ball before Newkirk was driven in by a groundout by freshman Jennifer Johnson, putting the Hawks up 2-0.
  • Freshman Nicolette Barranger makes in all the way around the base paths in the fourth inning, scoring on a pair of errors from the catcher and right fielder, putting the Hawks up 3-0.
  •  The Black Knights put themselves on the board in the sixth as Lacey Swefford led off the inning with a double to left, later scoring on an RBI single by Katie Ontiveros. The would hold on to take the 3-1 decision.

Game 2
  • Both squads jumped out early, each posting one run in the first inning.
  • The Hawks took the lead in the bottom of the second as Sencer ripped an RBI double up the middle, scoring Johnson who singled to lead off the inning, 2-1.
  • The Black Knights quickly responded, scoring four runs off three hits and two Hartford errors to take a 5-2 lead.
  • Army extended their lead on the fifth, loading the bases with two outs off to set up Kristen McPeek who laced a bases-clearing double to left center, putting the Black Knights up 8-2.
  • Sencer started off a Hartford rally in the seventh, legging out an infield single. Junior Kylie Dazalla ripped a double to center field, which the center fielder mishandled allowing Sencer to score, cutting the Army lead to 8-3. Army kept the Hawks comeback bid at bay, taking the 8-3 decision.
