Baseball Falls to UMass at Dunkin' Donuts Park

THE BASICS:

RESULTS: UMass 11 Hartford 4
 RECORDS:   Hartford (16-26) UMass (13-21)
LOCATION: Dunkin' Donuts Park (Hartford, Conn.)

THE LEAD:
The University of Hartford baseball team fell to UMass, 11-4, in a non-conference matchup at Dunkin' Donuts Park on Tuesday night.

Junior Ashton Bardzell led the way for the Hawks, going 3-for-4, and driving in three runs with a three-run homer in the fifth.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Minutemen were the first on the board, scoring a pair off one hit and two Hawk errors in the second inning.
  • UMass added to their lead in the third inning, working three walks to load the bases before Marcus Fry ripped a two-run single to left field, putting the Minutemen up 4-0.
  • Similar to the third, the Minutemen packed the bases setting up Fry once again, who blasted a grand slam, extending 8-0
  • Junior Drew Holtgrieve and sophomore Bryce Walker both worked walks in the fifth inning, which Bardzell capitalized on, sending a three-run shot to the right-field seats to cut the UMass lead to 8-3.
  • The Minutemen put runners on first and second with one out in the ninth, which a two-run single to center and an RBI single to left extended their lead to, 11-3.
  • The Hawks remained resilient, loading the bases with one out. Junior Chris Sullivan reached on a fielder choice, driving in senior Nick Campana to cut the UMass lead to 11-4. The Minutemen kept the Hawks comeback bid at bay, taking the 11-4 decision.

INSIDE THE NUMBER
  • Campana extended his hitting streak to 18 games with his single in the seventh inning.

NEXT ON TAP:
