THE LEAD:
The University of Hartford baseball team closed out their 2018 regular-season with a 12-7 victory over Maine in Orono on Saturday afternoon.
After falling behind early, the Hawks exploded for ten-straight runs over a four-inning stretch to top the Black Bears in the rubber match of their final #AEBase series of the season.
Freshman
Drew DeMartino led the way for Hartford, going 3-for-4 and scoring twice while Junior
Ashton Bardzell and senior
TJ Ward both went yard for the Hawks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Black Bears got on the board early, scoring two runs off a pair of sacrifice flies in the first inning.
- The Hawks quickly responded in the second as Ward launched his second home run of the weekend to left field. Hartford knotted the game up later in the inning off an RBI single up the middle from sophomore Robert Carmody platted DeMartino to even the game at two.
- The Black Bears retook the lead in the third inning, scoring four runs off three hits to take a 6-2 lead.
- Senior Nick Campana sparked the Hartford offense in the top of the fifth, ripping a one-out double to left center. Sophomore Zachary Ardito worked a walk in the next at-bat to set up Bardzell, who sent a three-run shot to left center and cutting the Maine lead to 6-5.
- The Hawks loaded the bases in the sixth inning, which Campana and Ardito took full advantage of. Campana reached on a fielder choice to score sophomore Jackson Olson before Ardito laced a two-run single to right field, putting the Hawks up 8-6.
- The Hawks continued to pad their lead in the eighth inning, scoring four runs off three hits and a Maine error to extend their lead to 12-6.
- A Black Bear RBI double in the bottom of the eight cut the Hawks lead to 12-7, but Senior Sebastian DiMauro recorded the next five out to give the Hawks the 12-7 decision.
