Women's Soccer Falls to Stony Brook in AE Championship

STONY BROOK, N.Y. — The Hartford women's soccer team saw its 2019 season end in heartbreaking fashion, as they fell to Stony Brook, 2-1, in the America East Championship game. Senior Molly Socha scored the lone goal for Hartford in the 80th minute, while Maia Perez finished with five saves. Perez, Sierra Stone, and Skylar Vitiello were all named to the All-Tournament team.
 
Hartford closed out its 2019 campaign with a 10-7-2 record overall, while Stony Brook improved to 14-5-1 with the victory.
 
STONY BROOK 2, HARTFORD 1
 
Maia Perez was forced into action early as she made two great saves within the opening two minutes of the match. The opening 45 minutes would then turn into a battle of the midfield as both sides tried to get a good look on goal. Stony Brook would take the lead in the 27th minute when Erin O'Conner gave the Seawolves the lead. Hartford's best chance in the first half would come in the 33rd minute when Madison Stabile rifled a shot on goal that was well saved by the Stony Brook goalkeeper. Perez would make three saves as Stony Brook took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
 
The Seawolves would force Perez into making two great saves early on in the second half. It would then be Hartford's turn to dominate possession and the chances as they looked for the equalizing goal. Sierra Stone would come close in the 70th minute as he shot missed just wide of the net. Stony Brook would double their lead in the 71st minute off a Fanny Gotesson strike. Hartford wouldn't go away as they cut the lead in half when Molly Socha launched an unbelievable strike from 40 yards away to put the Hawks on the board. The Hawks would continue to battle late on, looking for the equalizer, but couldn't find the back of the net as Stony Brook held on for the 2-1 win.
